Well, I am excited about this new possibility. I have in the past extolled OruxMaps and still recommend that app as the one app that makes our android device just like any other GPS device; you can download maps for offline use; you can create tracks and waypoints and the ability to upload said tracks/waypoints to several sharing sites, Everytrail is just one.
However, I have found some new info and maps that will give us the ability to use true 1:24,000 USGS maps; just about the highest resolution maps available!
I am working on a guide at my site, but here's where I found the base information:
Coconino National Forest - Projects
that _might_ give you the "PDFmaps.apk" download if you can find it and then there's the maps database:
USDA Forest Service FSGeodata Clearinghouse - FSTopo or Primary Base Series / Regions
Enjoy!
Like I said, I'm working on the complete guide at my tiny site.
EDIT: my link to the app at the Coconino NF site was for a beta version, I have found that there is now a release of the app in the Play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Avenza
One thing I didn't mention as well as the fact that even the beta (and now the release) versions have an option to download free and paid maps to the app. The only downfall I see with this app so far is that it will not automatically transfer you to another map once you leave the boundaries of your current map. I'll be writing the Dev's of this app about that, and we'll see about that.
good luck!
p.s. I'm going to move this thread to app announcements
