Utilizing internal memory vs card

Hi,

I should be getting the phone this afternoon and it will be my first android. I am just wondering what people usually do as far as storage. Do you install all apps on the internal memory and use the external for pictures, music, etc? Where is email saved? Just curious what the best practices are for using internal vs external memory. Thanks.

Im an android newbie, but there is one lesson i learned. If u want a downloaded app to start on boot it needs to reside on internal memory.

Other than that, im also curious to what the experienced folks have to say.

..... Do you install all apps on the internal memory and use the external for pictures, music, etc? .....

Pretty much this method for most people unless you're a power user but then you'd already know what your method of choice is.

With gigs of memory, you can install gobs of games and apps in internal memory and still have plenty of room. Semi-rare exceptions would be massive programs like CoPilot Live GPS which takes up a couple of gigs+, install ones like that on the external card.

And the idea of all downloaded, pics, movies, mp's being saved to the sd card is best practice too. The Maxx's default storage for camera pics and movies is the sd card so all is well there.

Also, if you move apps that have widgets to the external SD card, you will not be able to add the widget to your home screen. It's a limitation on Android OS that has not been resolved.

The only music I move to the phone, are the songs I use for ringtones. Otherwise, Pics and usic reside on the SD card. I keep Apps on the internal memory.

A somewhat related question - I hope I'm not hijacking the intent of the thread.

I've noticed that when I use the backup feature in some of my apps, it's backing up to the internal memory and not to the SD card. I've never had this issue before, and I can't find a way to choose file location in these apps.

When I look at the information for these files, it shows the local phone path as /mnt/sdcard, while the SD card path is /mnt/sdcard-ext.

Does anyone know a way to "force" to the external SD card? This defeats the purpose of the backup, since if my phone died my backup on internal memory would be gone as well.
