Help Various problems since upgrading to Froyo

Hi, I recently upgraded my Orange branded Galaxy S to Froyo using the official update (Kies). Now I am getting several problems with the handset:

  • It won't let me access text messaging without enabling the 3G data connection first.
  • I can no longer backup my contacts via Kies.
  • I can't reload my messages from Kies.
  • The "Data" icon on the pull-down notification widget no longer indicates the correct status of the 3G data conection.

Orange UK replaced the handset due to the first problem but the new handset has the same problem. I have seen the first problem described on other forums (with no solutions) so it seems to be a common issue.

I don't want to invalidate my warranty but I would be keen for a solution. Orange are not being at all helpful.

Make sure you factory reset your device after upgrading (back up first) .

A factory reset was one of Orange's suggestions but it didn't make any difference. I wasn't able to do a backup before doing the reset.

It is an Orange branded phone but it should still work, shouldn't it?

When Orange got you to do a reset, did they tell you to do it this way:
menu>settings>privacy>factory data reset?

If they told you to do it that way, it's not the best way to do a data wipe/factory reset.

The best way is the 3 button combo mode, recovery mode:
press and hold the following:
Volume up + home key + power button.

When phone gets to samsung boot screen release power button.
keep other 2 keys pressed until you see a screen with coloured text.

at the top will be blue text look for data wipe/factory reset, navigate to it using vol up/down.
press the home key to confirm the action.

on the next screen in blue will be a lot of NO's, int the middle will be 1 YES, navigate to it with vol up/down.
Press home key to confirm the action.

If you can't get into recovery mode it is likely you have one of the handset that has the 3 button combo disabled.

If so call orange and tell them and they might change it.

I don't think it is anything that could be solved with a factory reset since the problem also existed with a brand new handset. I also do not want to do another reset since I cannot backup my handset any more. I have called and called Orange over the issue and they are useless. I spent 5 hours on the phone to them last week alone.

you say you updated the firmware on your phone, which is good, but after the update did you do the wipe data/factory reset?

If you didn't, you will still have some old files on the phone from the previous firmware and this will course all sorts of problems and conflicts.
trust me on this, I have been there with problem not unlike yours and the only way to sort it out was to do a wipe data/factory reset.

it would be my guess that orange told you to do it through the settings on the phone, they probably don't know about the 3 button recovery mode.

I can understand your frustration with orange, been there with them myself.

It's up to you to decide which way to go.
Good luck

Just a thought, start up kies go to Tools>install drivers, this will re-install the drivers that are needed, then connect your phone. fingers crossed.

Hi - I have had EXACTLY the same problem with my orange branded handset. I am now on my 3rd handset - the previous 2 failing to function after froyo update. I followed the instructions on the upgrade to the letter but found numerous problems - including but not limited to the one described regarding text messages and mobile data.

I took delivery of my third handset today (with android 2.1) and have resigned myself to not being able to upgrade to froyo with orange. I'd rather have the handset fully functioning. Really really frustrating though!

Sorry I don't have a solution - if you have any new info pls let me know!

Yep there is a problem with the messaging link where 3G needs to be enabled.

A work round is to use the social hub, I've replaced the messaing icon with this and messaging works fine.

Data icon works fine for me.

you say you updated the firmware on your phone, which is good, but after the update did you do the wipe data/factory reset?

I did the factory reset using the way that Orange suggested and that did not help. I also did not know about the 3 button reset.

The trouble is now I can't back-up/restore via Kies (since the "upgrade" to Froyo). I would lose all my data again (as I did when Orange replaced the handset).

If I could back-up and restore data I would be OK with trying the 3-button reset. Others have suggested other ways to back-up but I could not understand them.

What exactly do you want to back up? there is an app in the market called MY BACK UP, you can use it free for 30 days. This might be your best option.

What happens when you connect your phone to kies and are you using kies2?

I want to back up my contacts, settings and SMS/text messages mainly. I would like to avoid time-limited software if at all possible as they have a habit of timing out when you most need them. I agree 30 days should be enough though. I have been told that you can sync stuff to gmail but I haven't figured out how to make this work.

I am using the latest version of Kies that I have been offerred which is 1.5.3_10103_102. I haven't heard of a Kies 2. Kies worked OK when my handset had 2.1. It still recognises the phone but now it only works for some functions but fails to back up contacts and fails to restore SMS messages.

Use the kies uninstall program to remove the version of kies you are using

Reboot you PC.

Install kies2 and reboot PC.

Start kies2, wait for it to finish loading and then connect your phone.
When kies2 detects your phone it will install the drivers it needs.

You can back up data to your Google account, but you can only back up your contacts. For some reason it doesn't support SMS.

You can go to the market and download SMS Back Up and this will back up your SMS's to your Google account.

Gmail is Google mail and you can't back up anything using it.

I would suggest doing the following on your PC before installing the new version of kies.
Start>control panel>programs and features. in the list look for:
Microsoft.NET Framework 4 and also Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Extened

If you have an earlier version of Microsoft.NET framework i.e 3. or 3.5 + any service packs, uninstall them and download the latest, version 4 from the Microsoft support site.

link for microsoft.net framework. During the installation it should download and install the other components needed. Reboot PC after installation.

I tried your suggestion of backing up using "my backup" and then using the three button factory reset but things are even worse now.

I keep getting errors like "application has stopped unexpectedly" and I have to click "Force Close". My WiFi access no longer works properly. It can't connect unless my phone is right next to my access point and it keeps losing settings. "My Backup" does not restore contacts at all so I seem to have lost all my contacts.

My phone seems to be running much slower than before too.

Hmm not sure what's going on. I have used mybackup quite a few times and it worked perfectly every time.

wipe data/ factory reset should make things worse so again not sure what's going on, unless it's something to do with the firmware your on.

Try this and post the results back:

*#1234# this will bring up a version screen

you will have:
Phone
PDA
CSC

Build info

write it all down and post it here.

PDA: I9000BVJP8 PHONE: I9000BVJP3 CSC: I9000ORAJP8 Build Info: 2010. 12

Ok that looks to me like network specific firmware. What net work are you on?.

The thing with doing the wipe data/factory reset is that it is designed to sort out most of the problems we get with these phones, so it won't have harmed the phone.

I take it you did it the way I said in an earlier post to you?

It's an Orange (UK) branded handset. Yes. I did the reset exactly as you described.

Have just re-read your original post, sorry I should have remembered you were on orange.
I'm on Orange to, so know what you mean about there support, it's shocking to say the least.

I did read some where the other day that people who had updated there Orange branded phones were having all sorts of problems, I know this doesn't help and you want a solution.

The only thing I can think of at the moment is to flash your phone, using odin to Froyo JPO and then use kies to get back onto official firmware, version Froyo 2.2.1 =JPY.
By doing this you would end up with an unbranded phone free of all the bloatware that Orange have put on it.

I'm lucky that my phone was unbranded when I got it from Orange at the beginning of July last year, so don't have to wait for Orange to roll out there version of the firmware.

Since the handset is fairly new I am reluctant to void my warranty. However I will probably unvestigate how to use Odin. Is there a good guide anywhere?

Yes there is. I will try and find it for you and PM you with the link to it.

If you are prepared to give it ago, you will find using odin is quite simple.

The thing to remember is you will first flash to JPO using odin, then the idea is to get you back onto official firmware using kies, this will put you on JPY and believe me JPY is just great, fast, smooth and no lag.

I assume JPO is 2.2 and JPY is 2.2.1? I wish they wouldn't use different designations for firmware versions!

Will the new firmware unlock my phone or just debrand it?

Your spot on with your assumption.

Flashing will just debrand your phone. Some Orange branded phones were unlocked.

To find out if your phone is unlocked do this:
Tap on phone icon and enter *#7465625# as though you making a call.
If all locks are off then you have an unlocked phone but if network lock and network subset lock are on your locked.

There are ways to get it unlocked. have a read of this thread

Unlock Galaxy S

Just had a word with a friend of mine on another forum and he says you could flash straight to JPY from what your currently on, but this would be using just odin.
