Help Various unknown apps

Hi all. I know searching the forums is a very smart choice when looking for information and I always do a search before starting a new thread. However, in this case I am unable to locate anything and I think it is because my search strings are not very useful. Basically, I'm not sure what to search for specifically to find what I am looking for and I am hoping you guys can help and either point me in the right direction or just tell me whats up.

Here is the thing. I have noticed lately that there are a ton of apps running on my phone that I have either never heard of or just sound rather dubious to me. I am hoping there is some sort of database or anything that can help me to define what these various apps are and what they are doing and/or if they are needed. You know, like there are with Windows processes. There are a ton of places you can go to find out what this process is or that one is and what they are doing or if they are necessary.

Is there anything like that for Android? Or even just a guy who knows alot about the various apps and can help?

Like I said.. if there is a thread about this already I apologize.. just please show me where. Cause I couldn't find it.

It would probably be a lot easier if you just listed about a dozen typical ones. There's a lot of Linux running in the background of your phone and, in the case of a Samsung phone, a lot of Samsung background apps. If it's com.<something> it's probably one of those.
 
First of all, GTWalling... Thanks! That is a great list and one that I will bookmark for further reading.

I am going to look through that and compare what I have with that list and see what I learn. I WILL come back afterwards and report what I end up discovering. I know people always say that and rarely follow through but I will.

Why? Because I figure that what I find out could eventually help someone down the line. Yet it would have never been possible if GTWalling never read and then responded to my posting.
