Hello all, it's been a long while since I've been on the forums. But I can't find answers to my questions anywhere else.
I have a Verizon LG G3 and the phone is now paid for, but I canceled my contract with them.
Because it is not connected to Verizon anymore, I don't receive updates.
I'm still at Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
I've heard of updates to Marshmallow and even Nougat.
Without being connected I don't know how to get to the newer versions of Android OS.
Is there a way?

I love the phone, even though I've had it for 2 years, the features are still very satisfying to me.

You could KDZ flash the latest KDZ image. There is no Nougat officially for the G3, but you could flash a custom Nougat ROM if you wanted to. But, to get the official MM update, the easiest is to flash the stock image. You can get all the info on how to do so here:

Just follow the instructions in the first link. They're pretty easy to follow, but if you've never flashed KDZ images before, read it thoroughly and multiple times before you attempt it as well as before you ask any questions.

Then, once you feel you understand what is required, download the proper KDZ image. The latest is 49A. 47A was the first Marshmallow release, with another security release numbered 48A. 49A came out in December from what I remember. Just be cautious with 49A. I, and many others, have had issues with it, but it appears we had failing hardware. Many others have reported no issues with it, so proceed at your own risk. My issue was right after taking 49A, my SD card started to unmount all the time. Flashing back to a previous version appeared to fix the issue, but eventually, it happened with any version, so I believe it was just coincidence that after taking the 49A OTA, my SD card slot was going bad and it just happened to show itself right after taking the OTA. I don't believe the OTA had anything to do with it. But I wasn't the only one that experienced the issue.

Do flash a custom ROM, you'll need to downgrade to the 10B via a TOT flash, root via Stumproot, then install TWRP. From there, there are multiple ROMs with instructions on how to flash them. All of that is in the Development forum in XDA for the Verizon LG G3.

Also, I'm no longer on a G3 since it died in December.

No. If you want to flash the KDZ, you do not have to be rooted. KDZ are stock factory images for the G3. It IS a factory reset, so it WILL wipe your internal memory, so back up everything before you do it. And there is no way around it since you are not hooked up to Verizon to accept an OTA. This is your only option.

Rooting is necessary if you want to flash a custom ROM. In that case, you have TOT flash down to 10b so you can then root and install TWRP. Then you can install a custom ROM of your choice. Any Marshmallow custom ROMs will not be based on 47/48/49A I believe.

But, if all you care about is getting the latest stock Marshmallow, then just flash the KDZ (47A, 48A, 49A) of your choice. If you want to root after installing a stock Marshmallow KDZ, you'll have to downgrade to 47A and can only use Kingroot which I would avoid at all costs. It's from China and requires you to be connected to the internet so it can root your phone. Who knows what it's doing. 48A and 49A are NOT rootable at all.
