Root [Verizon] can you root S3 after latest Jelly update 4.3?

Looking into some other things here for ya:
  • Reboot the computer
  • Change the USB cable you’re using
  • Try different USB ports on your computer. You have to be using a mainboard (powered) port. Try as many of those as you have on your computer.
  • Reinstall the Samsung USB drivers.
  • Try a different version of ODIN
  • Turn off all antivirus/anti-malware/anti-spyware/firewalls
  • Use a different computer. Now, run through the list again. Try everything all over again on the new computer.


Still looking for some more ideas for you;)

I think you can stop. I tried my work computer and I got the original No wipe image to work.

I don't understand it myself as this one is running on XP and I have less permissions than my personal computer but, my phone boots up and I think I am rooted.

1) How can I check if I'm rooted?
2) How do I permanently disable/delete that 4.3 update (On reboot it allowed me to defer the update by time and date instead of just time)?
3) Do I dare continue with rooting process?

Well, sweet!!!:D

Keep going thru the rest of the method if you haven't already;)

We can get rid of that 4.3 update notification later by using TitaniumBackup (an app in the PlayStore), or by flashing a custom rom.

Okay I will push forward.
I tried installing Ti Backup and it won't run because of no root.

What state is my phone in now, exactly? What did step 1 do or change?

I'm not sure what step 1 does, but the files in that download that you flashed probably have the right settings for the other steps to work :dontknow: :)

After step one you won't be rooted yet (hence TB won't work;) )....it's not until the completion of step 3 will you will be fully rooted/unlocked bootloader etc.

Edit: and just for anyone following, you are using this guide correct?

Step 2 done (kinda alternating between rooting and watching the game)

I have uploaded the .zip to my SD card.

Now that I have CWmod installed, do you know of a good guide for what to do to flash the new ROM (have never used CWmod recovery)

Yes, we can help when that time comes;) So many roms available :) But all installed in basically the same way..
Step by step.....are you on step 3 now?

Yes, that's what I meant. I thought that's what step 3 was, flashing a ROM, using CW recovery. I'm ready to boot into recovery and flash the .zip I uploaded from the guide. I'm asking is there a navigation guide for CWrecovery.

Oh sorry, I did find this guide for CWM....it's a little old, but you'll get the gist of it:

If you want help with flashing a rom, I'd be more than happy to do it, however I'm going to be clocking out in about 30 minutes:)

A brief, but important note before flashing anything, including roms.....
Make a nandroid backup!!!
That is done in your new recovery.
A nandroid backup is, for lack of a better term, a snapshot of your phones current state. Kind of like a game save point, or a computer restore point.

Booger something up and the phone bootloops?....if you can access recovery, you can restore that nandroid.
Be sure to keep a copy on your external sd card, and also keep a copy on your computer....it can be a life (phone) saver!!!

Once the backup is done, (and we can get into this later) find a rom, download it, verify the md5, put it on your sd card, boot into recovery, make a nandroid (if you haven't done it already), wipe cache--wipe dalvik cache--factory reset, install (flash the rom) <<<<<----cliff notes version :)

So what they are having me install in step 3 of the no-wipe guide, is that a ROM? I feel like I may have been mixing my terminology.

I want to do just step 3 right now, but I have to boot into recovery to do it according to the guide. That will give me root access from what I understand.


  • If you would like Both Root and Unlocked Bootloader Main (Download #5 to your SD Card) ***RECOMMENDED***
  • Boot phone into Recovery mode (See here for how-to)
  • Flash the download you chose from above using your custom recovery
  • After reboot your ROM will now be fully rooted and your bootloader fully unlocked to allowing additional flashing of custom kernels/recoveries

Okay, then lets do that, install the superuser .zip. (my bad calling it a ROM)

I should make a backup though, right? I have been poking around the menus in the guide and it would be:
- Backup and Restore

Correct...backup:)
Finish with the step 3 first you eager beaver LOL :)
If you are not sure of what something is in CWM, don't mess with it unless you ask....(I speak from experience :( ..but fixed it :) )

Shit shit shit, I was poking around the menu and I started "backup to external SD card" with an ill timed click >_<

bad, or not bad?

I have not installed the .zip yet.

So, now that I'm rooted the thing I wanted to do was purge and stop that 4.3 update.

I're read up and it seems I can use Ti BAckup to freeze the SDM 1.0 which will keep the reminder from coming back. I've also seen some recommending renaming the files using root explorer (different app than Ti backup?). Do both work the same or should I do both to be safe?

After that, I know the update has downloaded to my phone and is sitting in the system memory somewhere...where is it and how do I delete it without wiping my phone's data completely?

Yes, you can use TB or Root Explorer;)
I think the SDM 1.0 is a system app, and you can rename it to SDM 1.0.bak using root explorer. (/system/app)
If you decide to use TB, you will need to purchase the ProKey for TB also because the free version of TB will not allow you to freeze apps.

If your update has downloaded and is in your memory, you may find it in your downloads folder. I think there you can find that folder using a file manager (such as root explorer) under /sdcard/downloads. :)

You can delete that file (for the update) with no worries about wiping anything else.
