Verizon Device Swap Question - Father's Day Present

Semi-newb with super basic question just don't want to purchase wrong device...

TL;DR Is there any real limitation to using the LG Revolution over the S3 for someone who just wants to surf, share pics, eBay, etc.?

Hi, want to bring my dad into the current decade and upgrade his Verizon phone for him to a smartphone (not eligible for upgrade, just want to buy one and device swap).

Anyway, the mandatory things are 4G capable, and a way to have text reflow when browsing the web as he can't read small font (for android you can get text reflow with Opera browser).

Please suggest a phone! I have the S3, but it's still expensive ($180+ used). What about the LG Revolution VS910 ? It's like $50.

The main question I have is- does it make a difference that the Revolution runs an old Android OS version (2.2 I think)? As I understand it, it takes a lot of effort (and $) to update devices to run the current version of Android, and that's why not all phones run the current version. So would there be any real limitations for him running an older version of the OS?

What would he be missing having the Revolution instead of the S3? He wants to be able to surf the web, take and share pics, eBay and whatnot. If they are both essentially the same for him, then might as well save a few$.. Any other phones you could think of?

Text reflow can't be forced in most browsers if the page is written to have fixed width. (Blame people who think they're web developers because they read a book or something.) Modern code allows for reflow in any browser.

Also, you're not limited to Opera. Any phone can use any browser. But no browser can fix bad code on the page.

Hi, thanks for your response. I get what you're saying. I was just saying that I have found that the native browser would not reflow text- like on a forum/discussion site if you zoom in- but Opera browser would.

Thanks for replying but my question was more about the LG revolution - S3..

android 2.2 is so damn old. that phone must be old!
don't do it!

it will NOT be enjoyable to use.

and if he starts to enjoy the phone.. and wants to learn ... try new apps.
android 2.2 might be an issue.

by your numbers.. it looks to be about $120 difference. do it!
or give him your phone.. and you upgrade!!!

Hi dollerprod, I moved your thread to the Device Comparisons forum :)

The Revolution should be upgradable to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). As dan330 mentioned there will be some apps that require a newer version of Android, but if he's mostly taking pics and surfing the web this might not be an issue. Personally I would recommend a Galaxy S3 over the Revolution.

Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX is another option, it's upgradable to Android 4.1 and dual core. You should be able to find some for around $100 - $120.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for wrong forum :)

Turns out I think I found a Galaxy S4 on craigslist for $200. If that doesn't turn out to be legit, the DROID RAZR MAXX doesn't look bad- thanks for the suggestion.

What do I need to do to make sure I don't get $crewed with the craigslist deal, just call up Verizon right there on the spot and have them run the IMEI (*#06#)?

If possible meet your seller at the phone store and have them verify it's not stolen. Then have the phone transferred into your name while the seller is still there. After that they can't report it stolen.

do as Kate said...

if seller is NOT willing to meet at a phone shop.. move on to next seller!!!

I guess nevermind...

I called Verizon to try and hook up a S3 to the line, but they said I would have to purchase another plan because they could not hookup a smartphone to the plan.... So, what was the point of having unlimited data if you can't have a phone that uses data (to a useful extent)?

It is a line that was grandfathered in that already has unlimited talk, text and data.

But when tried to switch the phone on the account (that already had unlimited data), was told they could not activate the new phone.
