[Verizon] Gnex signal/receptions issues. What should i do

TkNeo

I am having terrible signal/reception issues on my GNex. My coworkers next to me are having great signal on their Verizon phones whereas i get no signal and one bar at times if i am lucky at time.

I am running everything stock Android 4.0.2. I am still within the eligible time-frame to return the device but I want to try an upgraded rom or a radio because i love the phone otherwise. Anyone has any suggestions if I should just try a 4.0.4 ROM OR a 4.0.4 radio or BOTH ?

Pls help.

I wouldn't judge the signal by your bars in the status bar up top.

Can you get on the web during these times of coworker comparos? Do you get dropped calls? Have you tried some speed tests?

The 4.0.4 radio could increase signal strength for you. The problem is how can we really tell if the signal bars or dbm readout is accurate? idk?

There are some who emphatically state the .4 leak radio does nothing for signal strength. meh....

Try it can't hurt. And if it does you can try another one.

Or maybe the phone isn't for you and you might want to grab something else. How many days do you have left to return the GN?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I cant get on web either. its not dropped calls per se but more like not having signal or very little signal. i cant make calls at time and at times the call breaks. my wife got the same phone and she has the exact problems.

I really like the phone and disappointed that its not working for me but working for so many others and therefore want to try it out to fix the problem if i can. i have about 9 more days left in my free-return period.

I read up on rooting the phone stuff today.. but still a noob. i was confused if i should try something at all, what should it be ? i thought just flash a new radio as thats my only concern with this phone instead of flashing a new rom and a kernel. thoughts ?

honestly the leaked radios have been a mixed bag. They help some and to some they don't change anything. At this point concerning improving signal reception we're all at the mercy of Samsung/VZW to push an official update for the radios.

What kind of phones are they using? Just curious.

At the same time with theirs and yours on the desk about a foot apart, go to Settings/About phone/Status/ and compare signal strengths.

Then you be the judge. I have the patience to swap phones until I get a keeper if possible.

Whatever you do, do not let your 14 days go by with the thought of "a fix for this is coming." There is a radio issue and VZW insists on putting the blame on Samsung. From day 1, at my house I have never had above -105. I average -109 - -113. I have tried multiple replacements. I have rooted and no luck. VZW has finally agreed to send out any 4G phone to try and resolve this issue. My wifes iPhone has 4 bars, never drops a call and full data. I am unable to get data, messages are queued and never sent, this has been a disaster. I was part of the original mega thread long before the release and I am truly disheartened that I am unable to get this phone to work for me.

Be smart, do not think you can fix every issue. There are knows issues with this phone and its antenna/radio. Best of luck!

pretty much word for word goes for me as the above stated. It's really bad that this device is portraying a bad Android experience for a lot of people.

Have to second the return/swap the phone suggestion. I don't know how much updating radios helps, a lot of it could be placebo. Perhaps if people are in a good location and there was some very weird software bug, it is possible that it will help but it's very very unlikely software will fix a major reception issue. My reception has been great, but it never changed going from 4.0.2-4.0.3-4.0.4 radios.

i think it is very possible that software can fix it. I am just tired of waiting on it. I've tried the leaked radios with no change in reception in the same locations. So i have to assume that is why they were never pushed officially. Word on the street is FC03 is possibly a new LTE radio. It hasn't been leaked yet though.

Thanks for the advise everyone.

To update all, i rooted my phone. First i flashed the 4.0.4 radios and noticed 0 change. Then i flashed an AOKP 4.0.4 rom as well to see that part of the software made any difference and guess what, it didn't. Then i went to the Verizon store yesterday to ask for a sim card change. It took them more time to change the sim card and re-activate the phone than it did for me to root and flash new roms and it was my first time. I am waving a white flag. Absolutely love this phone (have been an iphone user so far) but not going to wait for an update. In my opinion, these phone careers and cable companies are not to be trusted 1 bit. I am going to return it and get razr maxx even though i dont like the look of it. I really wished GNex would have worked as it has for so many people.

Ok, i was fed up with not getting the reception so i got a replacement in the form of htc rezound which cost me only $49. It looked like a better product than the weird looking razr maxx. I was thinking i would really miss the GNex but Rezound is actually a great phone. The sound/speaker etc are awesome and feels good in the hand. After the ICS update (which could take a million years though), it would be even better.

I had the ReZound for 3 weeks and it is a nice device. Glad you are on a good track now.
