Root [Verizon] How can I move my apps and run them of an SD card?

NJRonbo

Android Enthusiast
I have just rooted my phone this week.

Have no desire to install any ROMS since it sounds awfully risky to me and I hear they don't always work well.

I mention ROMS because, if what I read it correct, many of them already have presets that trick the phone into thinking its running off an SD drive.

I just want to find a way I can copy my apps to an SD drive and run them from it.

There is a app in the Play Store called Apps 2 SD. Don't know how well it works.

Elsewhere I heard of a program called Link2SD

Anyone have experience with these programs? Are they fool-proof?

Any other ideas that could provided how to accomplish this task with minimal hassles?

Thanks as always

Out of curiosity...you have a phone that has a minimum of 16GB of space. What do you plan on putting on your phone that will require it get moved to SD? It was important on lesser phones that didn't have space (like my wife's OG Droid), but you should have plenty of room on the phone, especially if you're storing your media files on the SD card.

NecessaryEvil,

Hello.

Well...it's not an original idea. There are many people who do this.

16GB is not a lot of space for apps when considering that this is going to be my primary pocket device for the next two years. Within the first week of owning this phone, I have added a wealth of apps, and I suspect that will slowly continue for some time.

I also understand, if reading correctly, that running the apps off the SD card frees up memory as well.

No it doesn't really free up memory, it just frees up internal storage. App2sd it just a quicker way of moving rather than manually going into app setting via phone settings to move them manually

Dragonslayer,

Thank You.

So, App2sd really does work then. Great.

Is this a "rooted" only app or can non-rooted people use it? I am rooted, but my co-worker who wants to do the same thing, is not.

For me, I agree. But some people are running games that have multi-GB data files and are actually running out of space. If you aren't playing several huge, graphics-intensive games, then you're right. You shouldn't need to move your apps to an SD card.

+2 agreed.
App2SD doesn't work on S3 because of the larger storage as mentioned previously. I also think I read that in general ICS or Jellybean doesn't have that option. (not sure of that)
There are custom ROMs that do allow Apps to be moved, as I write I don't remember which ones but you can browse thru the list and see which ones have that feature. You mentioned that it's risky to change ROMs but you've already rooted the phone which is just as risky, you're already 80% there, might as well try one that at least does allow for Apps 2 SD. I did my first ROM a few days ago, it Rocks! Risky? No, it was unchartered territory for me so I did my reading and asked noobie questions. Everyone here is ready to help but seriously, if it's important to move them, just read up and learn to Install ROMs to get what you want.

Captain Brick,

Thanks for the help.

Been *trying* to get someone to hold my hand to tell me how to brick, what is the best ROM to get and so forth...

Anyone new coming into the scene, like myself, has to wade through hundreds of posts in the XDA developers area for some kind of insight. They don't really appreciate newbies asking questions.

It's been really tough to find out how to get through the other 20%, and with Jellybean around the corner I am not certain this is the best time to be playing with ROMS.

If you have a place in mind that would help me greatly, by all means that help would be appreciated.

What if I partition the SD card to, say, 8GB for photos?

Will the application work then?

watch YouTube videos,
do some reading here, XDA, and Rootzwiki.. Here is most casual laid back place. I did all that before asking questions because these dudes do this for fun so I at least wanted them to see I was trying.

Alot to consume but hell, if I can do it, you can. Ima total noob at this with only a month using Android. Lots of people saying the S3 is near impossible to brick so read up, try a ROM with App2SD. Don't worry about Jellybean around the corner, with custom ROMs you will have it before everyone else.

Good Luck.
