Verizon may introduce device payment plan

Is this a payment plan for those who wish to buy a device at full retail? Therefore NOT renewing their contract? I was under the impression that as long as you don't renew your contract you can keep your unlimited plan? This would need to mean lower cost service since they would not be subsidising the cost of the phone under these circumstances, otherwise I don't see it being very popular.

So you will be essentially paying twice for your phone. lol

Keep in mind

No contract, it pays off in the end not being tied down for 2 years and having to worry about ETF should something happen and you can't pay your bill.

Also if they go the t mobile route, there's no waiting 2 years to upgrade ;)

Though there is no contract, you're still going to have to pay a monthly bill for phone service. And on top of that, you'll be making monthly payments on the phone for two years. So, the only difference between this and a normal contract is the absence of an ETF. Or am I thinking incorrectly?

That's pretty much it and having the option to buy another phone at any point you want.

Only catch you'd still have to make payments on the old device until it's paid off.

One thing I would love about this setup is being able to buy a second phone at any time, make monthly payments on it like I did the first one, and not have to sign up for a second line of service - I could use it as wifi-only. Would be nice to buy another device to use as a handheld media center.

I think t mobile does exactly that

I touched on this in another thread about the upgrade changes, but here goes.....

VZW is changing some policies, among them will be the way that you are allowed to upgrade. Upgrades will all now be 24 months instead of the 20 that we are used to (or 10 if you were on an employee plan). During this time they will also be introducing a new way to purchase subsidized phones. You will pay the subsidized price and then spend the next 12 months paying off the rest of the subsidy. This doesn't count if you use an upgrade, but if you get the phone in between upgrades. This won't effect your upgrade and will only change your contract if you are less than 12 away from the end. Yes, your bill will go up, but you will not have to pay full retail at the time you purchase the phone.

I will provide more information and updates as I get them. As things are subject to change before this goes into effect on 4/21/2013.

This isn't going to work because a Verizon phone won't work on other networks. You can't really leave Verizon without buying new hardware.

I hope Verizon does adopt the t-mobile model. I think its a game changer. I'm seriously thinking about going back to t-mobile because of it. Unfortunately their coverage just isn't quite as good.

Does anyone know what the real mark up in price for a top of the line phone is? I still find it hard to believe that they are $600 plus. If I were to pay full price for a phone, I would hope that there was a plan available that was less than the plan price for a subsidized phone. Same plan price for both phones. Maybe T-Mobile is onto something. Bringing some competition back into the game.
