[Verizon] My 'sdcard' problem

Well, I spent my days off crack flashing a bunch of 4.2.2 roms and didn't find enough to make me want to keep them over my 4.1.2 Sourcery 3.2 rom. So, like the last time, after restoring my 4.1.2 nandroid, I set about copying/moving everything from the /sdcard/0 folder to /data/media then deleted the '0' folder.

However, I muct have screwed something up, because my camera and gallery won't open, they just say "no external storage available" with only one option and that is to close. I can see my picture files in /data/media/DCIM/Camera, but they won't open. I also have Business Calender Free widget which won't work because it says it can't access the sdcard. Every other app that uses the sdcard has no errors. And yes, I cleared data in each of the trouble apps, rebooted, and still have troubles, also uninstalled and reinstalled each. And I was using CWM 6.0.3.1.

So I guess at this point I have three choices:

1.) Hopfully I can fix this with some adb commands:party:

2.) I have copied every vital thing to my pc then format the 'sdcard'.

3.) Return the phone to stock, flashing the stock images and then totally start over.:banghead:

Again, TIA.

I think that by deleting the 0 folder you have confused Android. The /scdcard/0 folder is symlinked to /data/media/0. I'm not sure why other apps can access the sdcard just fine but I would do option three since you have already backedup your sd. That way you can start fresh with all files in the right place. Flash back to JDQ39 and you will be fine, IMHO.

The thing is I want to be on 4.1.2 and the 'sdcard' is in /data/media. There is yet a 4.2.2 ROM that does everything my 4.1.2 ROM does.

Edit: with the above in mind could I just get away with option 2?

In that case, I'd flash the 4.1.1 image to get back to that file system. Then recovery, root and flash a 4.1.2 ROM. That way you avoid any further hang ups, including the slight possibility of not being able to boot; in which case you'd have to flash a factory image anyway. That's my advice based on how I feel I would deal with this were it my device. :)

Yes and I agree as the factory image way would be the best for a nice clean start.

But one last clarification/question. Flashing the factory images puts my phone in the same state as when I got it out of the box, right? Meaning that it has to be activated on VZW again as well as signing back into my google account, right?

I only ask because of where I live is remote and when I received my gnex the first time, I couldn't do anything with it until I drove about 30 miles to be in a VZW 'home' area to get it activated.

TIA.

Well, I reckon I'll wait until my next couple of days off (Tuesday-Wednesday) to test things out. I will start with the 'sdcard' format within TWRP 2.5.0. Then reboot the phone and see what happens, and if I can then start to restore stuff to my 'sdcard' from my PC.

Failing that, I will have the time to do the factory image flash(s), drive to where I need to be for the activation, and then go on about my business.

I guess I'll have to 'chalk' this up in my sticky; unless you really find a new feature in a 4.2.2 based ROM that you cannot find the port for in your 4.1.2 ROM, just don't do it, as going back is a major PITA!

once you move to 4.2, going back is simple... just dont change anything and the recoveries will still work for you. Early on I moved back and forth without issue, but I didnt change anything in the file structure itself.

Well, I'm happy to report that everything is good again. I was skeered because I really didn't want to go through the hassle of going back to totally stock, but I had everything ready just in case.

But I booted into recovery, formatted /sdcard, booted up and everything works again, shazamm!! All I have to do now is reset my ringers, notifications, etc.

Thanks for all the tips folks and tdevaughn, I think next time I go crack flashing some 4.2.2 I'll try you idea, K.I.S.S.
