About last week I attempted to root my s3 on 4.1.2 and while following the steps correctly I bricked it, but now I have a new phone on 4.1.1 and don't know if I should try again? Any suggestions?

What guide did you follow? And do you remember at what point the phone became unresponsive?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439 I followed that guide and on step two when I flashed vralec boot chain in Odin mode.
Did you check the MD5 of the download?
I can't say exactly what went wrong but just make sure you don't extract anything (with the exception of the ODIN.zip itself). And use the PDA box in ODIN.

I just downloaded the link in the description there was only one download? The md5 showed has to match the one I download?
Each of the md5's of your downloads should match the md5 that is posted. If they do not match, then the downloaded file is corrupt and you will have to redownload.
