hows it going guys? just got myself a nexus and i noticed it isnt the same as any other android phone ive had. i do want to get root and maybe later experiment with some roms. so my thing is would someone point me in the right direction as to what i should do first? i keep seeing unlocking bootloaders and such but i want to be sure. just want to know where to start and what you guys recommend. thanks in advance VITOKES

I highly recommend wugfresh toolkit unless you prefer the old school way. I think his main site is wugfresh.com. It will explain everything that is needed and download all of the necessary files and run all the commands with a few clicks.

I haven't got a link right handy to it, but Chief's guides have been awesomely helpful when I rooted mine! If I can find them, I'll link them, but they should be around the forums plenty here, if you find them first!

EDIT:
Here's a link to his guide for the new 4.2 system files and whatnot. I'm sure you'll find yourself looking at 4.2 ROMS anyway, so here's that one, while I look for the other!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nugdF8dCvmDxvDcuI2xV_fa8RXLXZdy00U5caIxPKYk/edit?pli=1

So, short version after you get set, here's the steps that I take to flash a new ROM each time (the abridged version):

1)Reboot into Recovery (which you'll have after you get TWRP installed), and backup the phone, just in case.
2)Download the new ROM and GAPPS if needed, to your phone.
3)Open Titanium Backup, and make a backup of your apps and stuff as outlined in the guide. Make an Update.zip from TiBu after that.
4)Reboot into recovery, and wipe the parts that need to be wiped per the guide (cache, etc).
5)Install the ROM and GAPPS zip files.
6)Reboot the phone, skip through the setup process as much as possible, don't put your account info in yet. Then reboot back to recovery and install the TiBu Update.zip file.
7)Reboot phone, open TiBu and follow the guide as to what to restore.

And finally.. ENJOY! Cause that's really all there is to it. I usually make a backup from my launcher and stuff so I don't have to redo that, but I usually only do that if I've changed stuff around. I find that every time I refresh my phone with an updated, or new ROM, it feels like a whole new phone, starting over. I have my info, and my Let's Golf guy never forgets what level he was on lol. But I get to start with new wallpapers and widgets if I want.

The only other tip I can give would be this: When reinstalling apps using TiBu, I usually look through the list, and look at things that I have to restore, versus things I can just redownload. For example, I have my Battle.net Authenticator on my phone. I always restore that, so I don't have to unlink and relink it to my account (or as I did in past, have to e-mail their support to have them remove it for me when I forgot and it wouldn't reload). Likewise with certain other apps that I have data saved for. But like Words with Friends, and FML, and silly things like that, I just redownload fresh from the Play Store after I'm set up. I do this only so I don't run the risk of weird glitches. Words stopped giving me notifications once, for example, after I restored it. I uninstalled, downloaded fresh, and it works fine. So I just do that for anything I can afford to, that doesn't have saved data alongside it.

Lastly, I can say that Wugs is an awesome toolkit, but I know some people (myself included) have had issues with the newer 4.2 ROMS with it. It's supposed to work, I know, but for some reason, it hated me. But the Guide that Chief has out, and using TWRP, has been flawless for me. ROMS now don't even need me to hook to the computer at all. The only time I do, is if I downloaded the ROM to the PC first, then I just copy it over to the phone memory. Everything else, is done from the phone itself. The latest JB Sourcery release, I did at work at my desk the other day while I was bored lol. The whole process for me, takes maybe 15 minutes, and most of that is just waiting on the backup, and reinstalling with TiBU (I use the free version, so I have to accept every individual app restoring, instead of a batch. But as I said, I like to redownload a lot of apps fresh anyway, so there's maybe 20ish or so that I do with TiBu, which doesn't take too long).

Read plenty, browse the threads of the ROMs you might be interested in, and go nuts! It's a whole new world when it comes to your phone!

awesome guys i got myself rooted. and i have the goo.im and its telling me there is an update for my rom. thats just funny cause i havent flashed any custom roms. any ideas?

That is a very popular one. Go find the Chiefs guide on it, I know him well and I hear a lot of good things about his guide.:)

Is it GooManager that is telling that there is an update? If so, I had that problem with my Nexus 10 when the ROM dev wasn't updating something properly when uploading his ROMs to GooManager.

It looks like that is the latest Jellybelly version.

so i had made my backup of my stock rom and i didnt realize i had to select the option to make it a .zip file. now i dont have a back up of my stock and im not really digging sorcery. too much for me. great rom but just to many nooks and crannys that i really dont know where to go most of the time. but it doesnt matter because i dont have a back up! damnit

and also the regular gapps link didnt work so i had to get the inverted gapps. which apparently i dont like now. i didnt even realize it!

Don't go back to stock just yet lots and lots of other ROM's out there. I am running CM10.1 and really liking it. Close to stock but still have the chance to change things up. I heard but haven't tried mmuzzy, I that is really close to stock.

How did you make the backup? Backups are not. Zip files, you restore backups thru you're recovery...

Most custom ROMs have many features such as ours and are laid out much the same. Sourcery adds a tool box fur additional areas to customize or nor as a user sees fit.

Definately a lot of choices.. Some ROMs e more stock and some let you customize everything imaginable... Everyone has their own likes and dis likes... just find what works for you

well what happened was before i even flashed or tried anything with sorcery i made my back up of my stock. it did it all fine and said it was backed. i even named my back up and everything. i flashed sorcery and the normal gapps but it failed to load gapps for some reason. so i just booted up the rom anyway and it worked minus the gapps. so just calling and texting. i went to restore my back up and my back up didnt show up under the restore tab in twrp. so of course i was pissed. just to be safe i made a back up of sorcery once i got the inverted gapps. i selected (make a .zip file) for my sorcery back up and that one comes out on my restore tab. so idk maybe i did it all wrong or idk what. my biggest problem and having to use the damn inverted apps! lol

in all seriousness if i lost my original rom then im not really tripping cause ill just keep flashing different roms till i find one i like. but just sucks:/

The initial is still there.... Use a file browser, like root explorer, and go to data/media/ look for a twrp folder... Copy that folder to data/media/0 and paste... If it Asjs you to merge say yes.... Both backs should now be visible by twrp

idk i tried i guess its just my loss. thanks for all the help and i tried to download the non inverted gapps the links wont begin the downloads once i get to the host page

The issue is with dev- host. Com site. They have a post at the top of the pages now explaining why all links are down on their servers

Edit: Dev host is back up and running now

vitokes, I will re-affirm that your nandroid backup, whether created with TWRP or CWRecovery do not need to be created/converted to .zip files to work. Whichever custom recovery you are using should then easily be able to find the nandroid backup you previously created using same custom recovery.

However, I still have to wonder if this isn't just another thread/example of why not to upgrade from an Android 4.1.2/Jellybean based rom to an Android 4.2.x/Jellybean based rom.

I don't want to get on a soapbox here, but I still see so many threads and posts in threads about the 'new' file structure that Jellybean/Android 4.2.x gives us that screws the n00bs (and experienced users') devices. Just sayin'

i was fully aware of the possibilities that would happen with 4.1.2 but my phone was 4.2 when i got it. so that wasnt the problem i think. but i really just think it was about time i ran into some first time troubles considering it happens to everyone i was just really unlucky. but either way i really want to thank everyone that helped me this far. i just ended up settling for eclipse rom which was as close to stock as i could find really. but im still wanting to learn more about the nexus either way. maybe someone would be willing to teach me a little about why the internal sd card is separated into those 0 folders(ex: internalsdcard/memory/0/0/0/music) i have to dig that deep for any of my files. and all those 0's have the same folders in them but they are all empty! clueless
