Verizon number switch, data erase

Newbie
I got a droid X about two days ago, on Verizon. However, my t-mobile plan is not up until the 18th, so I have a temporary phone number. The salesman at Verizon told me that when he switches my phone to the regular number on the 19th (to make sure we're past the deadline) everything on my phone will be erased. Now, I know that much of my information, bookmarks, etc. is synced to my Google account. But I want to know if there is a way to prevent everything else from being erased? I was told the switch would be done remotely, if that makes a difference.

EDIT: to whomever moved this to the correct sub-forum for me, thank you. I did not see this section

Actually, when you reprogram the phone when the port is complete. (you will have to dial *228 and select option 1 to program in the ported #) it will not erase anything on the phone, just update it to reflect the new #. It will not happen automatically and if you do not complete the reprogramming your phone will not be able to make/receive calls use any data.

Verizon has a number of very capable people working for them. But, like any big organisation, they also have some...less capable people working for them. ;)
