Root [Verizon] ODIN boot not working?

Preface: I've had some experience rooting before but not since probably 3.5 years ago, and I've forgotten it all.

Trying to simply do the odin boot (not even sure if that's the correct terminology), and it doesn't seem to be working. I'm holding down VolDown and Home, then holding power, releasing the first two when it vibrates, and pushing VolUp, but the screen will either flash with the Android for a second and go directly into normal boot or not do anything and go to normal boot.

I'm not sure what's causing this, any help? Much appreciated.

I do the same as you kinda, but I keep holding all 3 until the screen comes on.

I think you have to hold all 3 keys until you feel it vibe, & then release the power button. Hold the other 2 until you see the warning screen,then quickly press volume up to accept the warning . . .
