WAY too much (mis)information out there and searching yields millions of results, all with different procedures.

I have an unlocked VZW GNex and need root access. I don't want the phone wiped and I want to be able to receive ota updates when they're available. Is this currently possible? If so what app does it?

Running 4.0.2 right now.

When you say unlocked, you mean your bootloader is unlocked? If so, you needn't worry about wiping the phone, rooting won't wipe it.

If all you do is root it then yes, you get the OTAs but they will probably unroot you when they install.
