Verizon Phone Recommendation for my Boss

b34k

Lurker
So my boss just decided today that he wants to join the 21st Century and upgrade to a smartphone. He's a longtime Verizon customer and is overdue for an upgrade.

As for capabilities, he really just wants it for emails, contacts, and navigation. As a Galaxy Nexus owner, I think that an Android phone would be a good option to take care of his needs, however, I'm not too familiar with the phones Verizon has to offer.

My boss is almost 70 years old and isn't too tech savvy. On a computer, he knows enough to surf the web and write emails and stuff, but he can't run it well at all and constantly bombards it with spyware and bloatware. Then he gets really frustrated when he can't understand why the computer's running so poorly. I could easily see my boss getting mad if his phone has similar problems and possibly throwing it at a wall or out a window while driving. I've personally experienced some infuriating Android phones with my dad's Virgin Mobile Samsung Intercept. It runs super slow and buggy. If my boss's phone ran like that, I'm sure he'd be pissed.

So, the tl;dr version: I need a recommendation on a Verizon Android phone that an old guy can be taught to run basic functions. It also needs to be one that runs smoothly without too many bugs or issues.

A big thanks for any suggestions you give, I really appreciate it!

First of all, welcome to the Forums b34k! ALways good to see another Galaxy Nexus owner!

As far as phones, whew, where to start. For email, contacts, and navigation, I think focusing on the phone with the best data, voice, and gps reception would be ideal. The bigger screened phones (Nexus, RAZR, Rezound) seem to be better received by the wiser generation, as they can see things easier, and have more area to hit the proper button on screen. One thing to think about is people who have never had smartphones are many times shocked by the poor battery life compared to standard cell phones. The RAZR Maxx combats that a little with its huge battery. Perhaps have him start there?

Thanks, AntimonyER! Just got the GNex a couple weeks ago, so It's good to finally be one of you!

I think you're right about the large screen and excellent point about the battery life, I wasn't even thinking of that. Knowing how easily he gets frustrated with technology, I'm sure a short battery life would definitely add to that.

I wanna do some research on a few phones to give him some options to look at next week. Any other suggestions as to phones that excel in the area of reception?

Well I have some experience, my mother in law recently got her first smartphone (stratosphere, she had to have a physical keyboard.) so I just focused on the topics that bothered her the most. The Rezound is supposed to also have good reception. I am not very up to date on the mid-range phones, but the people in those forums will be more than happy to help!

Ok, cool! And yeah, I have no idea about mid-range phones either... I'm strictly a high-end guy, too. I don't know what he's going to want to pay for a phone w/ his upgrade, so I figure a variety of price ranges would cover my bases. Thanks, again!

I think there are a number of Android choices that might be a good fit. The final step should be for him to visit a Verizon store and handle the candidates and see which one "feels" the best to him.

Bionic and Razr MAXX are two candidates. I chose the Bionic. I liked the screen and the way it felt in my hand (and it would be in my hand a lot).

Others chose something else.

Thanks for the tip, Thom. He's going to hit up the Verizon store on Monday so i'll add the Bionic to the list of phones he should try.

I'll let you guys know what he ends up with!

I love my Casio commando and battery life is great. I easily get 36 hours with moderate use screen isn't huge, but is great. And if he gets mad and throws it he is good lol :D. Plus if he gets it wet or anything like that he is covered too.
