Not sure if everyone received (or read) the privacy notice Verizon mailed out this past week; however done of the listed items look to not be so good for those who root or tether without permission. (it says not including users in Arizona)
You have thirty days to reply either online at http://www.Verizonwireless.com/myprivacy or by calling 866.211.0874
The list of things they can/will monitor and "shared to affiliates and parent companies and their subsidiares" which basically means anyone that they want...
1. Addresses of websites you visit
2. Location of your device
3. App and device feature usage
4. Information about your use of Verizon products and services (such as data and calling features, device type, and amount of use).
5. Demographic and interest categories provided to us by other companies, such as gender, age range, sports fan, frequent diner, or pretty owner ("demographics")
Number four is not all inclusive in the examples given...
Number five could mean anything from uploading cookies from your device and storing them on Verizon or other servers to actually contacting websites to obtain racing data about your visits.
It then states that they will not share personally identifying information outside of Verizon (not that paying your rent online from your phone, what bank you visit from a phone app, or employer data gathered from visiting linked in or any site where you post any job information, plus your gender, when combined would not personally identify you..)
Possible usages of this data include
1. To create business and marketing reports
2. To allow other companies to create business and marketing reports
3. Make movie ads more relevant
Number one allows them to use generalized info and give it to anyone, including info like 90% of all males ages 24-30 have visited a porn site.
Number two allows them to give or sell the data they may have used in number one
Number three... Anyone remember carrier IQ?
Hope this helps everyone to decide to opt out of these, yes I am biased, no I do not work in the mobile device industry, not do I own stock in any mobile device company.
