I have a GSIII rooted on verizon. Also, I live in the middle of Chicago, where there is blanket LTE coverage. A few things:
1. Sometimes my phone says 3G when I am in a clear LTE area, same spot as I pick up LTE before. It seems like sometimes it gets stuck in 3G - cycling airplane mode usually fixes the problem and I get 4G back. Oddly enough, my old phone was a Motorola Droid X, that thing would seem to get stuck on occasion in 1X on areas that I clearly knew were 3G, and cycling airplane mode on that phone would fix it. Now this doesn't happen every time, but I'd say maybe this happens like 5% of the time where it gets stuck in 3G in a 4G area. It's enough to be annoying. Does this happen to anyone else and do you know the cause or how to mitigate?
2. Building on the above, sometimes my phone has said 3G but it seemed like I was getting 4G speeds, but I didn't do any actual tests to conclusively determine this. But when it has said 3G and I was on a call, I actually still retained data while on the call, so either A) It was really on 4G and it just said 3G or B) when on 3G since the galaxy has 3 antennas I can get mobile data and a call through at the same time?
