Root [Verizon] ROMS that support GSM?

I am currently running a Cyanogenmod nightly from only a few days ago and have unfortunately discovered way to late that it does not support GSM.

I am currently in London for honeymoon and simply cannot connect to the GSM network because there is no option under the network settings to connect!

Are there any ROMS that I can download and install that would give me the GSM ability? Or am I SOL?

Thanks!

Not sure if this would help, but CleanRom5.6 has a setting in "mobile networks" to change to "GSM/UMTS" or another setting is "Global"

Edit: see my sig. for a link

My CleanRom 5.6 is operating in global mode by default/installation . . . Is this normal ?? I thought these Verizon I535`s were CDMA only ??

Iteresting. I`ve been reading/investigating about unlocking the Verizon I535 for use with other carriers. In my research, It seems that Sprint & Verizon are not GSM capable because ot the band/frequency. Now . . . am I to understand correctly that If in CleanRom, It can operate in global mode, Does that mean it will work with an alternate provider`s sim ?? I do realize that som apn settings need to be changed also, & I think the operating band can be changed in service mode.

Now that unlocking stuff is unfamiliar to me.
Besides, I think unlocking a phone without the carriers permission is illegal.
But that may be overturned soon:)

Thanks for that! Funny thing is that I was running that ROM for a while, but thought I had more control with Cyanogenmod.

However, it's still not working. It won't connect to mobile data still. I brought it to the 3 store and they said the problem is that I can't set the APNs. When I go into the APNs menu, nothing is listed and the menu button gives no options to add them.

Any ideas?

From a brief search, it appears that with JB, that ability to change the APN's cannot be done.
I'll look around some more to see if anything else can be done.
Don't know if another SIM from the UK would work or not

I was always under the impression that Verizon locked the sim card for us carriers, but that it was unlocked for international carriers. At least, that's how the Motorola global phones are. I'll have to pop across the Canadian border with my brother and pick up a prepaid one of these days to find out.

You very well may be right as I really don't know if my Verizon S3 is simlocked ;) I never researched it. I'm assuming it is.

I imagine it would be easier to get the gsm working since one can flash to any partition, including the radio partition. Unlike a Motorola phone which is locked down tight.

Hypothetically it should be possible. Whether one currently exists is another story. Quite awhile ago, the Droid bionic had a leak of an ics test build leaked that turned out to be sim unlocked. A couple of developers got it fully working on a total because of this. Naturally this was removed from the actual update.

Success! Using CleanROM with HiAPN Global, I was able to connect to the 3 network! It appears that the range is limited however. We went from Central London up to Hampton and I lost connection. But at least it works where I'll be spending most of my time in! Thanks for the help!

Ug...back to square one now. I'm in Malta and the "3" card no longer works as expected. I purchased a "Go" card, but after I purchased it and the lady activated it, I discovered the same problem. She tried to go into the APN screen and couldn't add any information. If I had known she had to do that, I would not have wasted 10 euros!

Any ideas out there on how to enter in APNs???

I found this and I am willing to try it on my phone and let you know.
In fact, I am making a nandroid backup as we speak to try this:

[MOD] Add APN editor to System Settings - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

yeah, yeah, I know its for the Note 2 but its 2 simple lines in the build.prop!
I'll let you know what happens.
Meanwhile, watch the video on it:)

Very interesting stuff. Curious to see if we can use our Verizon I535's on other carriers/networks . . .

Edit . . .
For those of us that have RomToolboxPro installed, it has a build prop editor . . .
