Root [Verizon] Root question

Hey everyone. I'm new to the S3, coming over from the Thunderbolt. I've been reading up on rooting, and seen the methods listed here and in several other "places" other than these forums. They seem to get to the same result in varied ways. My question is: Are the root methods listed here still current? I like the method posted here the best, but I just want to be sure that I'm following a set of instructions that will still get root. Thanks for your advice.

I believe these are current. I followed the 2nd option which seemed to work pretty easily.

Thanks. I have another question as well. I see that there are two opposing opinions, much like most phones, on whether one should root or not. I rooted my Thunderbolt and saw benefits such as increased battery life, less bloat, etc, that comes from using dev ROM's. Being new to the S3, I was wondering: Outside of the normal reasons people root (flashing new roms, reduced bloat, etc). what benefits are being gained as far as phone performance? Were there any negatives? Thanks.

the same opinions pretty much follow the S3, it depends on the user and his/her intentions and what he/she wishes to do with their device.

Yes, the root methods are current and unchanged. I personally validated those procedures and won't change them unless I validate the change.

The only detail is that TWRP 2.3 is out and can be downloaded and flashed with GooManager. I've not tested 2.3 and it is a complete rebuild, so I'll wait for it to prove itself before using it myself.

As far as benefits go, some software requires root access to either run or to use some of its functions (i.e. Ti Backup, AdBlock, avast!, file explorers). It is like logging into Windows with an Administrator account.

Performance benefits may come with tweaks and/or uninstalling unused system-flagged apps but I don't see anything significant coming from those (this phone is fast).

The only negative would be a user running amok and deleting/changing things he shouldn't.

Great, thank you guys for your input. I always felt using some of the AOSP and debloat ROM's sped up my Thunderbolt, which is why I asked the question regarding phone performance. Thanks again.
