Root [Verizon] Rooting verizon S3

this has been a while for me. after i DL the files to my pc, do i have to open them after DL ?

Are you looking to root the Verizon S3?
The reason I ask, is the info under your name is a different device and carrier:)
Just want to make sure you are in the correct forum:)

Hey Mike. I'm almost finished but ran into a snag. I pasted the Root and Unlocked Bootloader #3 into the download folder for my phone but it doesn't see it. It give me the option of updating from sd card but doesn't work. What am I doing wrong? :-)

Which recovery did you go with?
Either way, I think there is a "install from sd card" option not the "update from sd card" option.

I'm on TWRP and if you have that, I can boot into it a minute.

Ah, you must have unzipped that file.....you have to leave it zipped.
Lets try this while the phone is still plugged in.
You are still in recovery right?
What recovery do you have?
Download the file again to your computer, and we can move it to your sd card while the device is plugged in.

I moved the entire zip file and rebooted to recovery again. I have the following options.

reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache

That doesn't look like all the options from either CWM or TWRP.
That looks like you still have the stock recovery.
Is there a picture of a green android guy? That is the stock recovery.

Did you do step 3 ""installing custom recovery"? It may not have installed properly.

Well NICE!!!! Did you have to reinstall the recovery?
Was that the issue?

Looks good btw!! :D You got it man!!!
CONGRATS!!!
Does your system say modified?

I did have to reinstall the recovery. That was not as bad as I thought. Good stuff. Thanks man. Hit me up when 4.2.2 is ready.

Well, there are custom roms based on 4.2.2 that are out now for our devices, just not an official 4.2.2 that Verizon pushes out.
Now that you are rooted, do not accept any OTA updates. Although with your unlocked bootloader and custom recovery, it won't be possible to accept an OTA.

Check out the link I posted that has some, but not all, roms listed. :D
Be sure to make a nandroid backup before you flash.
A nandroid backup is like a snapshot of your devices current state. Kind of like a game save, or a restore point on a computer.
If things ever go wonky, you can restore the backup and get your phone back to the point at which the backup was made.
It's a root user's best friend:)

OK. I think im rooted. i followed the video step by step.

now when i start WiFi Tether i get this message.

Tethering started with errors! Please check "show log"

Hmmm, that is something I have not seen before.
Try booting into recovery, clearing the cache and dalvik cache and reboot.
Did you install CWM or TWRP recovery? Just curious is all :)

Well, did the clearing of cache and dalvik cache help?
And are you using the tethering via menu/settings/more settings/tethering. (i.e. usb tethering).
Or the menu/settings/more settings/mobile hotspot (i.e. mobile hotspot) ?

Or maybe I am misunderstanding your issue?

I went and cleared the cache .

My issue is. I'm rooted. Now I just need to get a wifi tether app that works.

Hey Mike. Is there a "stock" android out there for the Verizon S3? I would like to have the same appearance as my Nexus 7 and 10. Thx.
