Root [Verizon] temporary root?

I've been wanting to just backup my google authenticator. I don't use root anymore and have flashed the latest stock ota. Is there a way to just temporarily root so that I can backup one file? I've been reading about doing it on other phones via adb, but I don't know if it will work or damage my phone.

I'm not sure I follow you. You want to backup only that app?
You can always redownload it and setup 2 step verification again.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you?

Yes, I just want to backup the keys stored in there. I use it for multiple sites, and it would be nice if I could just backup the keys rather through adb once, rather than through each site. I had read that there was a way to temporarily gain root access to some phones and was wondering if this was possible for this phone, rather than flashing permanent root access. I know I can always unroot,, but a temporary root would be perfect for my needs.

We are talking about this app correct?

Maybe I don't understand how it works but whenever I sign into my google account from a different computer, I enter my username and password. Then a code that is generated by the app on my device.
If, after signing in, I choose not to trust the computer after logout, I need to enter another code after signing in.

What keys are you asking about saving?
Application specific passwords?

Again, I am really sorry if I am not understanding you correctly. Perhaps I don't quite understand how 2-step verification in conjunction with google authenticator app works? :(

The app works for more than just google. Other websites or computers can be configured to use it. The codes are generated for each site based on a key and the current time. So if you have 5 computers / sites to log in to, they each have a different key. If your phone dies and you don't have the key (or a one time password) then you can't generate codes and can't login to the sites. The keys are stored in the app data that can only be accessed when rooted.

If this temporary root doesn't exist for this phone, then I'll just root my phone again and then unroot after I extract the keys.
