Verizon tether plans ??

I used it for a couple days last month. I activated it online and cancelled it online. I activated it again and cancelled it again the next week. I was only charged a dollar a day.

This really sounds like a great deal and actually is a really smart way for Verizon to get some jingle from customers who might be on the fence about rooting to get free tethering apps. If I am going out of town to a destination with no wifi, and I do several times a year for a long weekend to a relatives home, this will be a great feature for me. We have two lines with grandfathered unlimited data plans (Droid X and iphone 4). I can swing in and activate one of them on the way out of town on Thursday and swing in and have it cancelled on Monday and only be on the hook for $5+ tax. That's more than worth it for a long weekend of unlimited internet access in the boonies at my in-laws!

All this getting me a little confused. I have a grandfathered data plan for my phone. Want hotpot for 4 days.
Questions:
1. Is there any disadvantage to activating hotspot via the shortcut in the phone as opposed to the internet site.

2. What would the cost be if I turn it off after 4 days? About a dollar a day?

3. Does tether get me any more bandwidth, cheaper rates?

4. Does tether require an app to be installed on the laptop to use it.
