Help Versus touchtab

recently purchased a versus touchtab 10.1 via eBay
The tablet switches on and goes to the lock screen but the screen is dead
Have done a Google search to factory reset using the power and volume down and volume up buttons but can't seem to get it to the recovery mode
Can any one please offer any help please
Obviously the tablet might be broken as was from eBay but hoping a full on factory reset will enable the screen to work again if it is just a hardware or software issue hopefully

If it's a settings/user apps issue then a factory reset will fix it. It won't fix corrupted system software (though that is less likely), and certainly won't help with a hardware problem (repair is the only option with hardware problems).
