Help Very High Data Consumption by "Android OS + others" on XT910

I've been reading this conversation and I seem to be having a similar problem. I only just got this phone, and so far the data issue is driving me crazy. I can't seem to get the phone (galaxy s2) to stop using data unless I actually disconnect from the data plan entirely. Now this seems pointless to me, as I think having a smart phone should mean I should ask it once not to run an application and therefore my very smart phone (clearly smarter than me) will stop running my application and stop consuming data. So far this has not been the case... anyway, back to the point...

So I am wondering if the "Android OS + others" is the Onavo application running and monitoring data usage? This would be incredibly ironic if that is the case.

This might be a really dumb idea, in which case I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Thoughts?

I had the same issues reported by the original poster of this thread and I was able to fix the issue at least for me. I hope you can do the same if the reason for the high data consumption is similar to mine. The problem was related to the hotmail account that I registered my phone with. It is downloading always from the data even if I am connected via wi-fi. Furthermore, I have installed a hotmail app that is downloading the same messages so I was duplicating the downloaded data, even though this second one is using wi-fi. I unlinked the hotmail account from the built-in email client in my Razor XT910 and my data consumption reduced drastically. Facebook is still connected but that is fine as I am only using 20 MB per month for this app and my quota is about 400 MB so I have plenty for other applications once that I have taken out the emails consumption. The funniest part of all is that most of the emails are spam that hotmail is not filtering out anyways.

Let us know if it works for you.

My thoughts are the Android OS data usage comes from app updates, location/map information, weather, time, etc. All that is driven by the OS, so it may fall under the "other" category.

I would first go into Maps, Latitude and Places and disable all the tracking options, and pick WiFi updates where available. Then go into settings and turn off all the location based options (There are 3: Google, Standalone, VZW).

Second, I would absolutely get rid of/disable the stock Facebook app. I know this is a separate category, but you can get plenty of other apps that satisfy your FB addiction and you can control the update intervals (APW is my choice) and hence the data usage here.

Good luck!

I would like to thank "mahers" for help. I'm using samsung galaxy s duos. I have been using it since 1 months. Just 1 week ago I realized that my mobile battery is draining fast (atleat 40% faster than earlier). Then I checked my 3g data left in account. I was surprised to know that my data consumption has increased 10 times a day than it was earlier.

By reading this thread, I remember that I checked "use wireless networks" under location service in settings. After that only my data usage (and as a consequence of that battery usage) had increased. Just now, I disabled it and I'm pretty sure that it will solve my and others problem. I will post after few hours again to confirm it.

Thanks once again to "mahers"....

I think I could beat you all... my phone just consumed 260MB of data between 2-5am. While Wifi was on. Bam.

I cannot stand this!! And it seems there is not a proper solution. This sucks.

I have a nexus 7 and noticed that os services used 386mb over my 3g in the hour between 11am and 12pm... What the hell?!

I have a similar problem. My provider has an Internet package that allows me to use Facebook and Whatsapp for a limited fee, these are my most used apps so i subscribed to this package. However, if i use any other apps, i would be charged accordingly, outside the package. Anyway, to curb all other apps from using data internet, i installed a firewall called Mobiwol. It does what it says, and my data is now not being used up by other apps, but OS services, Google play store, play store services some how find their way out of the firewall. From these three, OS services is the most heavy data consuming app. Still looking for a solution :/

Btw, my phone is non-rooted, but if i decide to root it, would Droidwall block this data eating app?

Thanks
