Video Calls with Galaxy Nexus

I am interested in making video calls / chat with my friends and relatives. I have a friend who also has a Galaxy Nexus and we tried Oovo and it did not work at all. We tried Skype and while it worked OK, there were high pitched squeals (similar to feedback) during the call. I googled the issue of squeals on Skype calls and found that others have had this issue as well but did not find a good solution.

Is anyone using their Galaxy Nexus for video calling? If so, I would like to know what worked for you. I thought this would be easy as I remember seeing some videos of video chatting on the GN, but so far I am not having much luck.
 
Both gtalk mobile to mobile, and gtalk mobile to browser were significantly higher video and audio quality (all over wifi) than skype was for me.

i should add i was delighted by this! almost all of my friends (even BBerry and iPhoners) use gtalk, i sent a total of 7 text messages last month!

so it's fantastically convenient to be able to initiate voice and video calls right from in the app.

What google really need to do is merge G+messenger, GVoice and GTalk into a super app. at the moment i have to switch to G+messenger to send pictures, and annoyingly there's not a way to save pictures i've been sent.
 
Ok, Thanks guys. You are correct about Google Talk. I had looked at Google Talk, but being new to all of this, I did not readily see how to use it for Video calls, and yes the video and audio are MUCH better than Skype.

I really appreciate your help in this as I continue to explore my Galaxy Nexus.

resurrecting an old thread,
but wondering about Network Video calls, with out g talk or Skype.
straight up through the service provider.
I have a SGSII which has the option to video call in the contacts, and it works,
but I cant see anything like that on Galaxy Nexus.
Is this not an option?

Don't see it in contacts, but I do use Skype video calls frequently. The video is fine for me and all my friends seem to have it. Few have bothered to get friendly with Google+.
 
It would seem the galaxy nexus comes with no native video dialing free of an internet connection and no app's appear to be available for this option either. I find it to be a big disapointment when it comes to delivering options we have got used to being standard features on mobile phones today. Further more whilst the device seems to run quickly and relativly bug free it is a phone with substandard basic graphics for most of it's menus and general features. I use fring to make video calls and it seems to work fine however it does rely on an internet conection and a fring account $$$ if you wish to make video calls to people who don't have fring installed.

You have to have some kind of data connection, otherwise it can't do anything... Or did you just mean wifi? If so, there's plenty that will work over 3G/ 4G. Actually, I think most or all of the video calling apps for Android work over cellular data connection. As far as an app that comes with the phone, Google+ will do it (I can't remember if that's preinstalled). But the point of a smartphone and especially Android is that you have the choice and freedom to use what you want.

I use Tango. I like that it uses your phone number as your username more or less. So then it looks in your phone book and pulls any contact that uses Tango (and does the same on their end). So you don't need to get anyone's username from them, it'll already appear in your Tango contacts.

As far as Fring video calling people who don't already have Fring costing money, I'm afraid I simply don't understand. How could you even video call someone if they didn't have the matching app/ service..?
 
my wife and I do this all the time, phone to phone, phone to computer using gchat. just go to a contact, scroll down and you'll see a section called "IM". There should be a video camerea icon next to it. click it and it will popup a video chat invitation dialog . select invite and you're off to the races!

I haven't had a need to try other apps as my whole family uses android phones, and therefore has gchat. works on 3g/4g or wifi.
 
When I was on my iPhone and not on WiFi I'd use Tango, I've downloaded it for the GNex but haven't used it it.

There is no "native video dialing" built in to Android. That is, unless you are talking about gchat. You'll always need a third party program, be it tango or Skype of whatever.
 
another +1 for gchat which i believe is now pre-installed on just about every android phone. but over 4g nexus to laptop is pretty amazing, i was shocked it worked so well.
 
Everyone is calling it GChat...is that the same as Google Talk? That is what I use for video calls. Works great for calls from my Xoom, GNex or Laptop. Calls can be sent or received on all of my devices.
 
I use Gtalk and Skype. Both works very well for me. My family, friends on skype are amazed at video/voice quality from my nexus.
