Help Video Playback Formats

Just curious it says that the phone supports MKV files but they do not play with the regular player. I do have a program to convert any video format to MP4 and have done that and it plays no problem with the default player. I've seen in another thread with the droid 2 it can play AVI's?

What formats does the phone play?

What player is the best that supports the most formats?

For my computer I use VLC and that is the best damn player there is for my PC.

Any information would be appreciated on this subject as I'm now converting TV shows and watching it on my lunch break.
