Help Video Player/Youtube Problems with Jelly Bean

Recently since updating to Jelly Bean I have been having problems with playing video clips through the default player and whilst on youtube.

What happens is if I choose a video from gallery the screen will forever stay blank and say that there was an error and I need to exit. While on youtube the video will forever buffer and shall also crash if I try to exit (have made sure it's not a wi-fi problem and is definitely phone related)

Obviously being default aspects of the phone I cannot reinstall any apps.

Installing another video player doesnt fix the play back problem.

I can fix it temporarily by turning the phone off and on but this seems to work for a shorter and shorter while each time.

I've searched for other threads for tips but have been unable to find anything.

Problem only began since updating to Jelly Bean.

any help?

If you are unrooted; have you tried a factory reset? You may have some corrupt system or app files. Performing a factory reset will give you fresh new files and may possibly fix the issue.

Be sure to backup your files first!

Thanks for the reply.

No I was holding out hoping there would be some other work around besides a factory reset. Thought maybe since the problem was temperamental there would hopefully be another work around.

I know I can back up contacts messages and media files easily enough but are there any ways to back up app data? Memos/calender schedules, game progress and what not.

Also, the apps that I bought, can I download them again free of charge ?

Calendar schedules should be restored automatically if you had set up an online account to work with. Apps you can restore, no problem. Backing up your phone with Google should mean that when you do the factory reset and sign in again, all your apps should automatically be redownloaded.

I have the same issue. Would be interested to find out whether a factory reset worked before I attempt it...

Thanks.

Hello there. Went through with the factory reset earlier today and so far so good. It's only been a few hours but that was usually long enough to bring the problem back before the reset.

Thanks a plenty for the help given

I've only just got round to doing my reset. Everything is OK at the moment, but I'm still waiting for the Jelly Bean update.

I'll let you know what happens when I'm all updated.

Yep. The system reset sorted it! Should have done it Months ago, if only I wasn't so lazy to back up all my files!

I'd be interested to know if WhoAreYa's nexus still plays the video's without crashing now that they've done the factory reset.

I did the factory reset on my phone about a month ago and the problem still occurs for me. As was mentioned previously, rebooting the phone lets you play videos for a bit. However, once you've used you tube or the gallery to do playback a video and then closed the app, it fails the next time you attempt to open it.

I'm wondering if I need to root the phone. Or if this is a hardware problem since not many users seem to be having the same issues.

Thanks.

I never had this issue on ICS, so I don't think it is a hardware problem. I have not tried factory-resetting my phone, so I can't answer if that fixes it.

Mine is working now i've done the factory reset.

I had the same problem as you and mine was fine on ICS, I only had the problems when I updated to Jelly Bean. I've had no problems since the reset and I can watch video after video on YouTube & Media Player without the previous problems. *touches wood*

If I was you, I'd try doing a reset again, you may have been unlucky and received corrupt data both times...

Thanks for the help.

I did the factory reset yesterday. I love Google backup.

Video playback worked like a charm....until I closed YouTube. Now it's the same thing -- video playback crashes when trying it after the phone has been on for a while or when reopening the app.

I wonder-- Do I need to get a new copy of JB before I do the reset?

I should probably mention that I bought this Google nexus in July and it came with JB installed. So it's a factory install.

Thanks again for the help.
