video text messaging

Droid bionic and Samsung Tab 2 7 plus several other android devices and operating systems.
I am looking for a text chat program that uses the front android camera similar to the way yahoo works in Windows. It seems that on the android all the programs use phone calls when using video. In Yahoo on the Android you cannot text chat with the cam on. You can only make video calls.
I have a deaf friend that I use Yahoo with on Windows but I cannot do this on Android.

Have you tried Skype? I know that they let you chat & have video. Might be worth a shot?
