Root [Virgin Mobile] Android 4.4.2 VM SPH-L710

I've flashed the Sprint ND8 successfuly, but where is the Virgin Mobile ND8?
Can I get a link.

I take it I need the Virgin Mobile ND8 to get OTA from Virgin Mobile?

There is no VM ND8, the build is NDC, and the link with get you the tar.

So I Odin'd the NDC update to my GS3 today and am loving it so far but I'm not getting any 4G or 3g signal. My phone is off now so would that have anything to do with it? I ported my number from virgin mobile to at&t s5 on a post paid plan. Any advice helps greatly.

What do you mean, off? As in, you don't have a plan on it at the moment? If so, then yes, you would not get data without a data plan :)

Is there something I can flash to get past this? Or is it a set thing with 4.4?

I just tried that and it says I'm up to date on mk5.

I had vm sph-l710pubmk5 4.3 os and was rooted, Philz Touch Recovery 6.
I received the notification 6/13/14 and tried OTA, but it failed when it booted into Recovery. After that, no more info on available updates; kept saying the phone was up to date, but it wasn't.

I downloaded KIES USB drivers and once installed on my netbook (XP), it showed that a software update was available. Long story short: used KIES software to backup to PC, no wiping or resetting, just ran the upgrade and it is now 4.4.2 OS, SPH-L710VPUCNDC. It takes a long time to download and install.

I'm looking to root and add a recovery only. Any tips?

Use Odin 3.09. Find the latest Philz touch recovery.tar file. Put phone into download mode by holding volume down, home, and power. Go to Odin and tar the recovery. Put the latest SuperSU on your phones SD and flash it from Philz Recovery. Bing. Bang. Boom. Hope I could help.
EDIT: We will have root for AT&T and Verizon S5's tomorrow on father's day!!!

Since it's a page back now, i'll ask again. Is anyone else having this issue? and is there a way around it? i've reflashed the NDC tar and the deodexed rom several times to no avail. i'm 100% certain the tar caused it since it did not do this on the ND8

I flashed the NDC tar directly over the ND8 and it went without a hitch. the only thing i've noticed not working properly is when I try to adjust the "contacts to display" setting in Contacts, it gives me an error that says "SIM Card Initializing..." and an "OK" button. it never goes away, and i'm unable to access this setting.

is anyone else having this issue? i googled it, but only came up with a result from an XDA thread where someone who was using a custom rom had that error come up, but it was fixed in the following update. obviously this isn't the case here, but i'm assuming it has something to do with jumping from the sprint tar to the VM one

In addition to my personal gmail, I log into a shared google account for my work contacts, and as you can see, the made up names and numbers are a little annoying, thus the reason i'm trying to hide them

I haven't seen anything like that. Have you tried reformatting your sd card? Put phone back to factory default? Back up everything you want to PC and try that. Outside of that, I'd say flash the ND8 stock Rom(the zip, so you keep NDC modem), and see if that helps. If you lose data, flash the ND8 modem(I have it).

Softtech is looking for the ND8 modem (I would like to have it as well):

hi, everyone. im new to this forum and have been following a few threads but here's my first post. so i just got a new vm s3 yesterday and immediately i set to work. activated. updated to latest ota update for 4.4.2/ndc. all was working well. then i decided to try for root and installed the latest twrp recovery and downloaded moonknightus 6.0 singularity. made backup of system data cache and dalvik cache. wiped the same ones and installed. said all went good except at the beginning it said warning: no file_contexts. and at the end it said set_perm:some changes failed. didn't think much of it as i've had similar messages appear on previous phones and didn't affect anything. rebooted. second logo screen comes up "samsung galaxy sIII" then reboots. goes back to recovery. so i wipe again and reflash. same warnings occur and reboot. boot loops back to recovery again. oh crap. well at least i made a backup. so i wipe again and restore the backup. reboot and then it goes further to the third logo screen where the samsung logo pulsates and the blue indicator pulsates. let it sit there for 15 minutes and thats as far as it goes. any ideas what i did wrong? and what i can do to make it a functioning phone again? thanks in advance.

Twrp doesn't work on this phone. You need the latest philz touch recovery. Then you can flash conquest. Unfortunately the backup you made with twrp is useless so you don't have your own backup.
Here is a link https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/ they are not in order. I think the latest is 6.48.4
I don't think you can flash anything with twrp, so download the latest philz .tar and use Odin.

First of all, welcome to Android Forums! Now the fun part.

Get the app "towelroot" Install app, click " make it rain" then install SuperSU from play store. Open supersu, let it disable knox and install binaries (choose normal method) All without a computer. Enjoy root and be careful. Read a lot before installing things or modifying your system.
