Root [Virgin Mobile] Backups and sdcard oddities

brechmos

Newbie
I came from the Motorola Triumph and had it rooted, CWM etc. It was great. I just received my S3 (VM) and rooted it too. But there are three things I am not understanding.

1) I have a 16G sdcard in there. The device has two "sdcards" one is the sdcard0 (which I understand is an internal representation for the internal memory). The second is extSdCard which is the one I installed. I can't seem to get any of the applications to write to the external sdcard. They write all their data to sdcard0. Back on the MT the apps wrote to sdcard which was the external card - that made sense. Why are they not writing to the external card?

2) I tried to do a backup of my current ROM. in RomManager it says it will backup to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup. When I click that it reboots to recovery. I tried "backup" and "backup to external sdcard" and they both give me "Can't mount backup path". I strongly think this is related to my stupidity somewhere else.

3) Now, sigh, I downloaded g60madman's CWM and am getting "can't mount /sdcard" etc.

I think I screwed up the permissions somehow. I am not sure which step to start at to try and fix this (on a Mac).

Any suggestions on how to fix these would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, just trying to get used to rooting etc on the new phone. I promise I'll be good if I can get this fixed.

I use twrp recovery and can back up to ext sd card as for the other problems you will have to do some reading

use a different recovery.

Phew... wow. Ok, I downloaded g60's CWM 6.0.2.8, pulled out the recovery.img file and then did:

dd if=recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18 (press enter)

when I came to the "(press enter)" I first said a quick prayer to the Android gods, wiped the sweat off my brow and hit enter.

It worked.

Yes, doing a backup now. :-)

I'm going to suggest EXTREME caution with your device. Reading your post is giving me flashbacks. I would bet dollars to donuts you have one of the 'new' devices. I have one of these newer devices and well it is a paper weight till further notice. I had issues with getting a recovery to work without the 'can't mount sdcard blah blah'. 6.0.2.8 seems to work most of the time. More info here 'same device'...
