I don't know if this is any help. But since the GS3 has Jelly Bean, it comes with a pre-installed equalizer. All phones with Jelly Bean has it. It's called MusicFX. The way to get to it is: Settings > Sound > Music Effects.

Strange because the Music Effects menu is nowhere to be found on my GS3.

For the GS3 and for touchwiz in general you can change music settings within the stock music app. Open the app>press menu>settings> and chose the tap that had "sound alive" at the top. You can change settings from there or using any 3rd party app that supports it

Did you follow the instructions carefully? The devs haven't made it easy. They're somewhat convoluted, even trying to get the correct files for your device can take some reading.
