Root [Virgin Mobile] Failed root! Need urgent help!

Mumonk

Lurker
I apologize in advance for being quite the noob when it comes to this stuff. And for the urgent part. But I am going on a trip tomorrow and I will be screwed if I don't have a phone.

I just got the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3 running Android 4.3. I followed the sticky guide at the top (Rooting MK5 4.3 for Newbies!) and now my phone seems to be "soft bricked" if i am using that term correctly.

Odin ran fine. I get into Philz recovery, format system, data, cache, and dalvik. It installs SuperSU just fine, then when i go to install the MK5 Rom Zip, it does this:

Installing /storage/sdcard1/MK5_STOCK_ROOTED.zip
Finding Update Package....
Opening Update Package....
Installing Update....
assert failed: package_extract_file("boot.img".
"/temp/boot.img")
E:Error in /storage/sdcard1/MK5_STOCK_ROOTED.ZIP
(Status 7)
Installation Aborted

If i turn my phone on it says Samsung Galaxy SIII and it just stays there forever.

I can still get into recovery and I can still get into download mode.

I would like to root it, but if for whatever reason I can't, is there a way to just return it to factory default?

Use Odin to push this file, which will return you to stock MK5, which is what I assume you had if you say you were on 4.3 prior to your root attempt:

Then you can follow the procedure to root again. No need to flash the MK5 ROM listed in the guide, you just need to boot back into your current system and make sure SuperSU is running properly, and you will then be running stock/rooted. However, I would also suggest that if your phone is that important for your upcoming trip, you should probably just go back to stock and then delve into rooting when you get back home. We can provide all the help you need here on this forum at that time.

PS-ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS make a backup in recovery of your working OS before attempting ANYTHING significant, such as flashing a new ROM; this should be standard operating procedure, and will save a lot of headaches further down the road! And welcome to the forums!

Just on a whim, before i checked these forums again, i decided to try the whole thing again a different SD card, and Wa-La! It worked! I guess I have a shitty SD card.

Although, when it booted up, while I have the superuser app with the little pirate android icon, i downloaded the Check Root app and it says I'm not rooted . So I must have done something wrong, but the phone is working, so I will try again when i have more time time.

And thank you struckn for your quick reply. The guide I followed said it was for newbies, but made no mention of the things you said. I guess I just need to be less noob. But thank you for your time.
