Root [Virgin Mobile] General Questions for Rooting 4.4.2 S3 VM [Resolved]

SilverSix

Newbie
This was originally a post looking for answers to things that may have been left unclear in both sticky guides. All my questions have been answered and my phone was successfully rooted. The first post was edited to document these questions in case someone in the future has similar issues.
Don't forget - ALWAYS backup before flashing and ALWAYS document your work, no matter what you do!

Q: Will this guide work with the most recent updates? I've seen videos and guides for up to 4.3 but my S3 came with 4.4.2. Or does the version of the stock OS not matter at all?
A:
Just to clarify, the 4.3 guide works for 4.4

Do not flash a older Stock version of android. Custom roms are ok.
Do not flash any modems.
Both could end in a brick.
Q: Most of the download links (LiquidSmooth, Philz) redirect to a directory, through which it isn't easy to navigate as I'm unsure of where to go. For instance, within LiquidSmooth's directory I found the folder for Galaxy S2 Sprint, but nothing like that for S3.
A:
It would be called d2lte on the liquid smooth and philz download websites. Make sure you download the .tar on philz and flash using Odin.
LS: http://www.drdevs.com/devs/teamliquid/Kernels/d2lte/LiquidSmooth/ - shows two folders, both of which are empty. Tried browsing in other subfolders but I can't find d2lte anywhere else.
Sorry. Go to the nightlies folder, and go to the s3 unified. Check your baseband on about phone. Are the last 3 characters nd8 or NDC? If so, don't worry about flashing radios
Philz: https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2lte/ - debating whether to go with 6.19 and stick to the guide or getting the latest release. Also, it's an *.md5 file (*.tar.md5) (...)
And you can use the latest philz, the guide is outdated. The md5 is so Odin knows your file isn't corrupted
Q:
I just reset it to download mode (Vol-, Home, Power) and it gave me the warning screen. I confirmed with Vol+ and now it's downloading something (Downloading... Do not turn off target!!) (...) Should I ignore it and continue with the guide? Or should I wait until something happens? (...)
A: Go ahead and proceed with the guide. Even though it "seems" to be downloading something, this will not interfere with Odin's process. Also, when you're done:
Its fine to turn off, as long as you aren't in the middle of flashing anything.
Q: What now? How do I know if I'm rooted?
A: After you complete the steps in the guide, let SuperSU update itself from Google Play (or do so manually) then open it (If it force closes when you try to open it, then it's either updating or it needs to update). Let it update binary, then select "Normal" in the next popup, and then have it disable KNOX. (Source) - Watch this video further to learn how to verify if you rooted your S3 successfully.

By the way, if SU is "stuck" on disabling KNOX, force close it, open it up again, then try again and it should then work. (Source)

Always do your research. The overall process takes less than 5 minutes, but don't be afraid to do some research if you still feel a bit insecure about this (like me). Rule 1 of rooting: STICK WITH A SINGLE GUIDE!! If you mix up steps from different guides, you may end up bricking your phone. Find a guide, and stick with it until the guide ends.

If you can't find anything through research, ASK. No one was born knowing. It's OK to ask questions.

Major credit to the creators of the guides, videos, and special thanks to pOsSuM72, hatredg0d and pbailey212 for helping me out when I needed it. If further questions arise, I'll document them here.

Happy rooting!!

Sorry. Go to the nightlies folder, and go to the s3 unified. Check your baseband on about phone. Are the last 3 characters nd8 or NDC? If so, don't worry about flashing radios

Thank you!! Got the files! I'll give it a try soon and post results later. It got pretty late to do anything and this week will be hell. Damn you, college!

Another quick tip about this phone. NEVER flash modems! You WILL hard brick.

The only way you should be updating the modem on this phone is by flashing an official tar update package.
What exactly do you mean by "update the modem?" Like, update the WiFi/4G drivers? I don't plan to touch those. I remember I tried to restore my first EVO V 4G to the state the second one was before its screen died and I selected one too many options and the 4G never worked again. As soon as it connected, bam! turning off then on again. But that's beside the point. Anywho... what modems? lol

Another thing. I just reset it to download mode (Vol-, Home, Power) and it gave me the warning screen. I confirmed with Vol+ and now it's downloading something (Downloading... Do not turn off target!!)

Nothing like that has been documented in any guide or posts in this subforum - I already tried to search for those terms. Should I ignore it and continue with the guide? Or should I wait until something happens?

EDIT: Phone was at 92% battery when it was rebooted, so I can wait for a while.

Gotcha. I went ahead and did it. I got the PASS! from Odin, installed UPDATE_3.19 for SuperSU, rebooted, and phone "updated" for a bit, then it's working as usual. However, I try to "open" SuperSU via apps and it force closes immediately. I don't remember it ever doing that for my past devices. Is that normal?

EDIT: Ignore the SuperSU question. It was autoupdating from Google Play, which explains the issue. It's opening up and working as intended now.

I. AM. ROOTED!!!! I feel powerful once more!! :D
But we're far from over. Now it's time to get LS.

I cannot fully express how thankful I am. Clicking on the button isn't enough. :D You both are amazing and I love you. :D Thank you so much for your help!!

Make sure you get the universal apns fix, I had to flash it twice for my 4g to work with liquid smooth. I only had this phone for a week, so I'm still figuring things out my self.

Special thanks yay!! lol. LS is currently my rom of choice. Total blackout and the built in adblocker are my favorite features. If you are looking for something fun to do with root you can look into xposed framework. I cant live without nfc lockscreenoff enabler and xposed additions. Main thing I use additions for is binding torch to the volume up key when long pressed while the screen is off.
