Root [Virgin Mobile] Installing CM 10.2 get assert failed: getprop(ro.bootloader)

Hi

I'm trying to flash my s3 with a 2013/10/4 10.2 d2spr nightly and I get the error above.

My S3 came with, and still has, the MG2 firmware. All I've done so far is install TWRP 2.6.3 recovery (via odin) and root it, all which went fine.

From reading these forums, I thought that the 10.2 d2spr nightlies flash without any additional changes on MG2 firmware phones - and that you don't even have to root them if you don't want to?

Or have I missed some additional steps, I do wish to use 10.2.x not 10.1.

thanks for any assistance
cheers

All d2spr Roms need to have the assert lines removed from the zip, as these lines of code don't match our device bootloader info. I usually edit out a lot of the unnecessary apps and delete the extra language files (non-English) from the keyboard apk while I am at it. You will need a program on your computer to unzip the file, I use winRAR, 7zip also works, and then Notepad++ to edit. I have successfully used this method with Carbon, JellyBAM, PACman, CM 10.2, LiquidSmooth, Eclipse, AoCP, AOKP, and a couple of others I can't remember off the top of my head. I would recommend Carbon, it is pretty amazing-it is my daily driver along with latest dkp kernel. Feel free to PM me if you want thorough step by step instructions, or if there is enough general interest maybe I will do a how-to thread. Be aware also that there are boot.IMG issues with any CM based ROM from the end of September/early October, as well as graphics driver issues for the last week if using a custom kernel.

I think the video will work excellent wonders. And the op needs to know that getting rid of some apps and unneeded junk will give you some space . Do it on the pc or laptop is faster than the phone .

i'm interested in trying out different roms. can you send me a pm with the instructions on how to? thanks!

Will do! Stupid question, but relevant, are you rooted and running a custom recovery?
it's not a dumb question. yes, my gs3 is rooted and i do have cwm installed. i'm using thedakman's midnight rom. i like it since i get 4g and everything else but since it doesn't look like he's going to keep updating it. i want to try other roms to see if i like them better. thanks again!

Cool. My personal preference is TWRP, but again, that is personal, CWM or TWRP really probably makes no difference in the end. Two other things for you; do you have the MG2 bootloaders (these are needed for flashing anything Jelly Bean, as the old bootloaders were for ICS), and are you in need of both 4G and MMS? You will need to flash Moped_Ryder's fix to get one or the other working, currently not possible to have both on a custom Jelly Bean ROM. This is even an issue for the people who got their phones through Sprint, not just a Virgin Mobile issue. Sprint doesn't have 4G in my area, so no biggie for me, I would rather have the ability to use custom ROMs anyway.

i know what you mean. i haven't used twrp, so i can't say that i don't like it. can i also have twrp, so i can try it out. i don't really send mms so texting for me is just fine. besides they can email any attachments. i prefer to have 4g since i like watching netflix on my phone. :) i've read about the issues with having both working at the same time. i still want to try it out. i almost forgot, i don't have the MG2 bootloaders.

The latest version of TWRP is 2.6.3, you will want the d2spr version. Go to Techerrata Downloads - Browsing d2spr and download the .tar file to push through Odin. For me TWRP is a winner just because of the touch interface, I used CWM on previous devices and just didn't like using hardware buttons to navigate, otherwise I thought it worked just fine. MG2 bootloaders are a must, original MD7 are Ice Cream Sandwich and will not work for flashing Jelly Bean. LordMage posted a thread for the Kies recovery file to upgrade to MG2 in this forum, it is a pretty large file if I remember correctly, so be patient, but you do need that bootloader. DO NOT try to flash any other bootloader (i.e. a Sprint specific version), my understanding is that there is a very good chance of a hard brick if you do. Just remembered something on the MMS issue as well, make sure that in the Messaging app settings you disable the "Send group SMS as MMS" if you are going to give priority to 4G over MMS ability.

Hi, thanks very much for the reply! That's very helpful, yes if I could I'd like to get instructions from yah. I'll send you a pm.

thanks again

I Flashed MD4 rooted recovery from rwilco12 dot com. Used goo manager from market to install twrp recovery. Installed rom of my choice (any d2spr roms). Finally applied apn fix from other thread.
