Root [Virgin Mobile] Kernels?

neospicer

Lurker
So I am getting used to the whole Android scene still and I have learned a lot. I know about Recovery's and Rom's. After being on the Cyanogen Rom for a while, I want to move to the new LiquidSmooth Rom. I know how to flash it and everything but I saw a post in there talking about Kernels. I looked it up and found the the Kernel is what helps the software communicate with the hardware. I have never flashed (or think I have) flashed a kernel (Do you even flash them?), but now I am interested in flashing one. I want something with good battery life and something that will make my phone go fast (Most importantly battery life). I have no idea what kernels there are for the Virgin Mobile GS3 and if you guys here could help me understand this. I would be very thankful. -Thanks

I also am on Liquid Smooth ROM. Yes you flash kernels like you flash Roms. In my opinion the stock kernel is just fine. There's a performance section in the settings menu. You have to experiment for yourself. Do you want power or do you want to be conservative to save your battery life. :) hope I helped a little

Ok awesome thanks! So 1. Good to know you flash them, 2. I really want something with good battery life. I saw someone in the LiquidSmooth Nightly thread that posted a link to this kernel which sparked my curiosity:
[ROM/KERNEL][4.4.2] Quantum 3.64 & QuantumKernel 3/25 - xda-developers
Over all, yea I would love a kernel with great battery life but I want to make sure i flash the right thing and I would also like to know the options out there. :D thanks a bunch man

Sure thing! But you might wanna be aware that kernels can also mess up certain things in certain Roms. Kinda like how shortmancom was having problems with GPS I think. But just be aware of those! I just choose not to change kernels unless I'm over clocking my phone for games :)

Oh wow, just took a look at that and I have a lot to learn. A couple more questions. Going to look into the kernels in a second.
1. Bootloader? I am a reasonable basic user who just wants good battery life and speed but I would like to know what the bootloader does and why you would change it. Is the bootloader even bigger than the recovery?
2. Modem? I am on baseband version MK5. Will flashing any of the modem versions effect my service? should I only flash the MK5 one?
3. BMS vs DKP kernel? What is the difference?
4. Which kernel would give me the best battery life and compatibility with LiquidSmooth? Lean, Quantum, or Stock?
5. Do you have to manually update the kernel? Are there OTA updates like for Roms?
Thanks a bunch guys. Sorry for so many questions. Just a lot to learn :)

1. Bootloaders come with official firmware. Not something that comes independently, as in you can't change just the bootloader. Don't even worry about this part for now.
2. Modems are personal preference, if one gives you great service, stick with it. I am currently using the MG2 radio, and it works very well for me. Every modem I have listed is a possibility to flash on our phones, including the Sprint ones. Just flash from recovery; if you aren't getting good service/reception, just flash another. Modems are independent of ROMs, so whichever one you flashed most recently will hold through any ROM flash until you intentionally change to a different modem.
3. Not a lot necessarily; kernels are like modems-personal preference. No two people use their phones in the same manner, so a kernel and its associated settings that works great for one user may be terrible for another. That being said, I currently recommend dkp and Quantum, very highly. Quantum updates almost daily as well, and devs for both kernels are very responsive and work hard to produce a quality product.
4. Again, personal preference. No other user can tell you what will work for you on your phone, especially with all the tweaks available.
5. Any time you flash a ROM, either a dirty flash to the existing one or a new one entirely, the kernel that comes with the ROM will replace what you had, so if you want a custom kernel, you have to flash one each time.

I've tried them all that kernel is currently the best one, and has the most tweaking options....
