You shouldn't have to, but if you do then you get the correct virgin mobile my account app and a few other things. APN fix actually fixes more than just APN.
I flashed the whole NJ2 update. I usually don't have to flash the APN fix because I use Chompsms and it has a setting where I can set the correct APN manually. I've been doing this because some of the AOSP ROMS I've tried wouldn't work with the APN fix and Chompsms would. You can always try the APN fix and see if it works for the ROM you're using. If not you can always use Chompsms to set it.
