Root [Virgin Mobile] [OUTDATED][GUIDE][MD7][MG2] Rooting & Recovery for Galaxy S3(VM)

Hello all. I rooted my GS3 using this guide and it went successfully. The only problem I'm having is that my phone is no longer receiving a signal. Wifi works fine and my phone number is still on the phone, but in the status bar a circle with a ring through it is shown instead of the cell signal strength indicator. The text "Searching for Service" is also displayed at the top of the lockscreen. I've read about how flashing a modem might help, but that stuff is over my head and I don't understand it at all. Cell service at my home isn't the greatest, but I usually get 2-3 bars of service. I am unable to make phone calls or send/receive sms and mms currently. Any ideas on what I should do? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Did you flash a rom? Rooting shouldn't do that.

Initially I did not flash a rom because I saw none were available, but then I did flash punkmaxx's "Stock-ish & Slimmed" ROM (http://androidforums.com/virgin-mob...35150-rom-7-12-slim-stock-ish-rooted-rom.html), which many have flashed with success (as seen in the thread). I did create a backup on my sd immediately after rooting however and can easily restore to it. The phone works absolutely perfectly except for the no signal issue.

I would give it a try. Do you use rom manager to flash your roms? If not then I recommend giving it a try. Its in the play store. To download cyanogen type get.cm in your browser, click the link and select your device from the list of makes and models! Is yours the i9300 ?

My model is the L710, the Virgin Mobile one and there is no download for that rom file on get.cm. Should I follow the guide already in this forum in order to install it?

I don't know what cm has to do with his issue. I'd either go get help in that thread or try a flash again. Make sure to flash from recovery and follow all the steps they outline in that thread. Make sure to wipe cache / Dalvik and if that doesn't work a factory reset most likely will.

If you want to flash CM there is a thread for 10.1 in this forum with a guide, I'm running it now, works great so far.

He's reflashed, wiped cache , data etc. Checked imei to no avail. He has added that he is not too sure on flashing radios so I set him up with cm10.1 for his device. If all is ok and he is happy with it then job is done.

Thanks for all of your help Aden. I'm probably not going to install CM because of several issues I see in that article (I'm not running 4.2.2, I'm not running their specific version of CWM, and I don't want to risk bricking my phone). I'll first see if I can get to a better location to see if it truly is just because the coverage really sucks where I live.

Seeing as how I've only had the phone for a few weeks, I feel like I should do a factory reset (don't have a lot of data on my phone and my really important stuff is backed up anyway). Is this safe to do with the ROM I'm currently running or should I restore to the backup I made immediately after I rooted?

Alright. I first reflashed the Stockish ROM (http://androidforums.com/virgin-mob...35150-rom-7-12-slim-stock-ish-rooted-rom.html) and I cleared cache and dalvik cache before flashing it. It did nothing for my issue. I then restored to my stock backup and performed a factory reset through settings. It successfully reset the phone but unfortunately it did not solve my problem :(. I still have the circle with a slash through it in the status bar.

I have looked several times at the bottom of the settings menu and there is a "System Update" section. Inside of it are the two settings "Update PRL" and "Update Profile" (there are two other ones but I don't believe that either are of benefit to me). Would either of these two settings help me/should I look into them? Thank you all for the help!

you have to flash a modem for 10.1, what are you talking about?
Please don't refer people to an article about Sprint CM10.1 (that won't work) when we have a guide for it already on this forum, it does not work without flashing a new modem & a apn backup/restore.
Instead, look at this
Also, none of that = factory reset.
Try factory reseting - THEN flash, not after.
If you still have the problem after restoring from nandroid you unfortunately probably borked something prior to making it.
and for the record recovery > rommanager ESPECIALLY because their aren't any virgin roms yet, and you need to do some special things. but mostly because you should know how to do this in recovery, as thats what you will use when you inevitably brick your device.

Sorry if I come off harsh, but this information is a few threads down.
Boot to recovery
Format /system, /data, /cache
Flash ZIP in Recovery
Reboot

I cleared /system, /data, and /cache. I also formatted cache and dalvik cache. I restored from the backup, and nothing still :(. I'm getting really worried now, but I think I found something. My "PRL Version" under Settings > About Device > Status > says that it's 0. I looked at my old phone (LG Optimus Slider on VM) just to compare them and that one has an actual number for it's PRL Version. Could this explain my problems?
