Root [Virgin Mobile] Phone Status: Modified

All -

My phone is rooted and still on the stock ROM. I checked my status after doing the update today (used the zip files and flashed) and noticed that the status of my phone is "Modified." I am not sure if it was this way before the update, but it is now.

Simple question: If I ever need to use the warranty service from Samsung, is there a simple way to revert this status back to "Normal"?

Thanks

Did you use Odin at all when rooting the device? If so, you likely tripped the flash counter it has to allow the carrier/oem to more easily detect if someone has modified the device beyond the stock setup. There's a paid app on Google Play called Triangle Away that is suppose to reset the counter I believe.

Yes I used Odin. Would the process be the same as the other versions of the GSIII as I found some information in the other forums.

I'm not too familiar with the procedure of using Triangle Away because I haven't owned a Samsung device since they started using flash counters. But to my knowledge, this is the prefered method of the root community on Samsung devices. I wouldn't image it would be any different because almost everything is the same across all the US devices, but it might be best to get confirmation from someone more up to date with Samsung devices to confirm what I've said.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully I won't need it, but it is good to know there is an option if I do. Ideally, someone will need to use the return service before me and can dry run...

It is to my understanding that Triangle Away alters the flash count and device status within a block of the bootloader, where both of those statistics reside. The SPH-L710 is a confirmed compatible device, but I'm not sure if this only indicates the Sprint version, or not.

I have reset code that works. I thought about making it into a stand alone flashable zip BUT i thought it more handy inserted into the stock rom zip. This way if you do need/have to return/replace/sell/whatever, you flash the stock unrooted zip with the reset code and it resets your flash counter, then update with kies which resets your recovery to stock and what you end up with is a stock rom and stock recovery with reset flash count. I've tried this already 'today'. Now it says...

ODIN MODE:
PRODUCT NAME: SPH-L710
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: NO
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE

Oh and 'Device Status' is 'Normal'
Anyone want the code just pm me

yes it work and it was shit simple to use. i might make a standalone flashable out of it one day. i can host the file for ya jup if ya want. mind you big thanks go to ObiPunk-Konbi...aka punkmanx The Brittion and of course you Jup.

this is the non-rooted reset flash able http://download.negalite.com/downloadlist/click.php?id=66
to be used with kies to get back to complete stock

you would have to make a custom update script and place a few files in the root of the zip and hope for the best or wait for a standalone zip should one come along

How would that be done though it's driving me nuts looking at this Modified stat lol?

So the one you have would work on root?

the one i have would reset to stock and de-root so you could kies restore to use with tech support to fix your phone back to complete stock. they had me RTN reset my phone and reactive it. now everything works just avoiding the update for now

So at this point right now the only option is to wait until someone figures out a way to maintain root status and reset the flash counter?

You mean like this..... weeeeeeeeee
This is dedicated to Jimmy Hendrix - If Six Was Nine...
vmu-gs3-flash-counter-reset-zip
So yea flash that and it will reset your counter. It flashed fine for me with cwm and my twrp.

You can go here and get the files used to make that zip. You will also find a twrp zip that works with new or old devices without the 'e:can't find /sdcard blah blah' error. I used the md7 recovery.img you see in that repo which was extracted from the firmware that is also in this repo to make this twrp SO, it is a pure virgin twrp.... that sounded so cool hehehe

As Jimmy Hendrix would say "You got me blowin' my mind!" THANK YOU Jupiter you rock :D

Edit: "Houston we have a problem." Dead service :( gonna go back to a backup but on the upside it does say Normal.
Edit:Phone is stuck not booting right going straight to download mode :(
Edit:Okay reflashed TWRP through Odin to regain access to Recovery because after I flashed the zip it didn't allow me access and hoping for the best. Jupiter you may want to look into the "vmu-gs3-flash-count-reset.zip" something may be wrong with it.
Edit:Still no service after restore flashing your recovery to see if it helps :(

Guys i am sorry to inform you that someone has problems with the counter and has lost connection. At this time i do not recommend using it. I am using this zip, i have flashed it at least 5 times with cwm and twrp with no problem myself but i would not want anyone else to have an issue. The code used is the same for the past week that has had no problem and all three files are available on my DL for anyone to inspect. I'll be back later this afternoon and look into it. I'm very sorry for anyone having a problem.

Literally all I did was flash it and then I have dead service with no custom recovery (which i fixed) no Baseband, no Meid or anything other than wifi :(
