Root [Virgin Mobile] ROM Flashing Oddness

neuikc

Newbie
Been stalking the forums for a few weeks and getting most of my questions answered with searches etc, but I've come across some strange ROM flashing issues with LS, CM, and Carbon.

First some info about what I'm currently running without issues on my VM S3:

PhilZ Touch 6.19.2 - CWM 6.0.4.7
CARBON-KK-NIGHTLY-20140401-0733-d2lte.zip
SPH-L710_MK5_modem.zip
UNIVERSAL_VMU_APN_FIX-2014-3-21_v1.zip

This is working perfectly but I've tried in the past week or so to check out CM and LS. I successfully installed a LS build a week or two back, but the issues with large SD cards (yes, even when formatted FAT32) made me switch to a CM nightly which worked out well for awhile, but I decided to check out Carbon and have been with it ever since.

Well when I've tried to check out the newest LS nightly (3/26?) and CM (04/02), after "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" and installing both builds successfully, neither would boot. Just go right to black and stay there until I hard booted it back into recovery, and restored my Carbon backup, and once again working perfectly. It's odd, but not critical as Carbon is working great, but I'd like to be able to check out other ROMS in the future and wonder if anyone has come across this before.

Secondly, and again nothing critical, I've noticed that the Carbon build from 04/02 on, all flash and boot fine, BUT, once booted I have no service and no baseband appears to be installed. I boot back into recovery and install the MK5 again, with no success, the builds continue to show no baseband version present. Which keeps me from installing newer nightly's, but again since I have a working recovery/build, not critical.

And advice on either issue? TIA

I can't speak to the problem flashing CM and LS but can tell you that I experienced the same phone service issue with the Carbon 4/2/14 ROM.

I'm downloading the 4/3/14 Nightly now to see if they fixed it.

Update....Just flashed the 4/3/14 Carbon and experienced the same problem with no phone service.

Here's some *new* oddness related to flashing LS.

So I found a LS build from 3/18 that my previous LS install had "automatically" downloaded via the in ROM updater. I successfully flashed that, and it booted up without issue. So I went into the LS ROM settings and ran the update device setting, it downloaded the 04/04 build and set it to wipe and install, it installed and booted up fine.

So odd that just downloading the ROM builds from the repository and flashing them through Philz failed.

So, I don't know if this will help. I'm also running Philz Touch Recovery. When you go to wipe the data, they're are 2 options that says something like 'Wipe Data' and another one that says something like 'Install New ROM'. I'm sure you know this. But the first time I tried to flash a ROM using Philz, I selected the 'Install New ROM' option. When I got to booting the ROM, it was all sorts of messed up. Had no signal and a bunch of warnings kept popping up. What you want to do when wiping data using Philz, you want to select the 'Wipe Data' option. I've been doing that every time I flash a new ROM and haven't had a problem. I don't know if that's the problem you've been having, but I thought I'd try to help.

Yea, I've been overly thorough and doing both, along with a dalvik wipe on all my attempts. Not sure what arguments the LS update process pushed through PhilZ, to install the newer builds that were failing to install the classic way, did, but I'm now checking out the 04/03 build of LS without issue so far. Random.
