Root [Virgin Mobile] Rooting the S3

Droidula

According to this post, you can follow this rooting method if your S3 starts with any of these model numbers:
SGH-T999, SGH-I747, or SPH-L710

For anyone who already has the phone, does the VM model match any of them? It says it should work on Sprint too; will we be able to use this rooting method?

The VM model is SPH-L710.

You used this? No problems, everything works ok?

Everything working after root? How is GPS by the way?

Thanks!

Its essentially the same phone, so it should be the same root process. Just make sure you are using files for your carrier

Root by itself should not affect the GPS in any way.

Just wanted to make sure. And about the GPS, I just wanted to make sure it works in general, because a handful of phones have had GPS problems off the bat, and it's a feature I use all the time. An issue-plagued GPS would make me hold off from purchasing a phone.

I asked somebody who got the phone early to try a method off youtube earlier, and he got root. I was planning on writing up a guide.

Thanks Austrie. I guess I have seen you here before just didn't put the two together. I should have know you were here also. LOL

I'm gonna play with my s3 for a few days before I hunker down and figure out how to root it. At this point, my main goal is to disable the shutter sound.

gps is excellent.. im coming from triumph.. but anyway it locks instantly. not even 3 seconds. you turn it on and boom u have a lock.!

Shutter sound doesn't play for me if I just put the phone on vibrate or silent.

You've got some hybrid VM phone. IIRC correctly, yours doesn't play the VM boot animation either...which is totally odd.

From what I've read online, the Sprint S3 all have shutter sound that can't be disabled (without manipulating the sound files themselves). All other S3s allow you to turn off the shutter sound.

So which version do you have?

BTW, I went into sound options, and turned each of the 4 sounds down to 0. It still made that sound.

Rename the following files to *.bak

\system\media\audio\ui\Shutter.ogg
\system\media\audio\ui\Shutter_multiple.ogg

What about the focus lock sound? Also, I assume I can't change these file names until after I root right? I just tried it with ES File Manager, but the change didn't take effect.

I was actually surprised that I was even able to navigate to those sounds and see them without root access. Didn't realize you can see stuff on root...just can't change it I guess.

Correct! You'll need to be rooted

Yeah, mine doesn't play the VM boot either. I was surprised when I discovered my shutter sound goes off on vibrate or silent. I have no idea why my phone is like this.

My phone says it's model number SPH-L710 and hardware version L710.14, unless there's something else you want me to check?

Curios to know if anyone's used/using this...our phone is on the supported list.

I used something similar all the time with my Galaxy Nexus...this might even be put together by the same guy, from the sounds of it. It was very useful.

Edit: I checked, it is from the same guy. If it doesn't already support the Virgin Mobile Galaxy S3, he can probably be convinced to add support.

Were you able to find where the focus lock sound and focus fail sound are located? There are a few files in that folder named like they would be the correct sounds but they aren't.

I also found a thread that talks about changing a line in a feature.xml file from false to true. This is supposed to enable the shutter sound option in the camera settings but it doesn't work. I even noticed that we have Sprint, Boost, and VMU specific folders with that same file. I changed it in all locations but that didn't help either. :(
