Anyone come up with a way to disable that, other than editing the build.prop? Can the audio files be backed up, renamed or deleted?
Thanks for any advice.

I deleted the files.Worked just fine.
When in camera mode click on the COG/GEAR icon. Scroll down and you can disable shutter sound
You sure? Just tried that and all I get are options for four sounds. Are you even talking about the stock camera app?
Thanks for the heads up on the legality, hatred360. I also shoot with a dslr and film slr, so I'm well aware of turning the sound off. I carry around a legally binding document about photographers rights just in case I'm ever asked anything by the police. Hasn't happened yet *knock on wood*

What were the files?
Curious... KJRob, which version of the system update are you on? I'm on robaho's modded V6 version. I tried backing up the sounds, and then deleting them. I even rebooted after deleting, just to be sure the sounds were unloaded from memory. It didn't work for me. The sounds were still there! I ended up reloading the original files from a zip file. Might as well have them on anyway, to be safe.
For those of you still having trouble running a silent camera, I found this app from Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oss.mcam
The only setbacks with this (and other silent camera apps) is that the photos are of a lower resolution. I chose this one, as it takes photos at 1280x800 res, higher than the screen res for the F3. The others I tried took pics at 800x480. At least 1280 makes for decent wallpaper material (enough res for decent post processing results), and 2x3 inch prints. Autofocus still works, as does flash, zoom, and some white balance functions.
