Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] Can't get into recovery mode

Crash11

Lurker
Hi all,

I'm having some weird issues.

Let me preface this with saying I'm a big noob with this kind of thing but I really want to learn. I'm trying to do two specific things with this phone: use wifi tethering and free up internal memory. I understand that loading a custom rom will do this but I have no idea how.

I followed the Stumproot process and that was easy. After that all hell broke loose. I've tried to read a bunch of topics about this but I still have no idea what a custom recovery is or what cwm or twrp are. I don't see any one single place that actually teaches people like me about all of this at the same time. All I can find is bits and pieces of different topics.

Anyway my immediate problem is I keep hard resetting or factor resetting my phone every time I exit recovery mode. Also the only way I can even get into recovery mode is through an app called quick boot. When I try holding down the Volume - and power buttons.....I see the prompt to release the buttons but when I release nothing happens. The phone just boots up normally. At this point I'm at my wits end and I've already lost anything important on the phone. So I don't care if I have to wipe the entire thing out all the way back to stock/unrooted and start over.

I'm basically begging you to guide me step by step through the process of installing a custom rom that will allow me to wifi tether in my house and get rid of all of the useless junk on this phone just to free up space. I don't use hardly an apps but I'm tired of getting errors due to insufficient space anytime something wants to update.

Can you please help me learn how this process works?

you don't need a custom recovery for those things...

if you are rooted just install link2sd and my WiFi hotspot app.

Do you have a link for your app's apk file? I've used link2sd, but didn't like it. I'm more concerned with getting rid of the bloatware becuase it would be less things alerting me to update, and free up space at the same time.

its in another thread. just search for robaho.

to delete bloatware just use a root based file manager.

also the latest version of link2sd works very well

Update: I tried once again to install the cwmt recovery using the tutorial on this site.
1 - rooted using stumproot
2 - installed supersu
3 - uninstalled stumproot
4 - installed Flashify
5 - followed the instructions for locating the file "cwmt_6.0.4.8-ls720.img" within Flashify
6 - Rebooted when promtped, which brought me into recovery mode
7 - within recovery mode I powered off the phone
8 - tried to turn the phone back on with the volume - & power buttons to go to recovery mode
9 - phone still fails to enter recovery mode, and now I have another factory reset

I'm really confused as to why I can't get into recovery mode with the buttons. What causes this?
