Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] HELP! SEVERE ISSUE! Update broke my boot!?

eve_brea

Newbie
so i had my phone setup with cwm recovery recently, thinking it would be cool to actually flash files and perhaps roms since this phone is stuck at android 4.1.2.

obviously i'm rooted as well.

this morning at work, about 9:45 it tells me there's a system update, click here to install, all that jazz. it appears to be this :

LS720ZV7 07/07/2014
  • Updated device to include ItsOn

However, upon rebooting it went to a cwm "progress bar" then said

secure booting error
cause device unlock so.. root success!

now i can't boot my phone. it says that every time, then goes to cwm.

also, i don't have any sort of backup because i didn't think i'd need one. damnit google.

so i'd rather not loose all my apps if there's a way to fix this (can't clear dalvik cache, i use link2sd and doing that breaks all the app links and completely bones the system, forcing a full stock reset anyway)

if possible i'd like to just reflash the stock recovery and let the update finish and boot my phone..

Wiping both cache and dalvik cache will not break anything or cause you to loose anything.

The 'secure booting error
cause device unlock so.. root success!' is normal. Your using a modified boot.img You should still be able to boot.

You should always make a backup. You learned that the hard way. Just do it next time.

Now to fix your problem I need to ask a question. Did you update via the ota update that poped up on your phone? Or did you flash the modified update here?

If your rooted, regardless if you made any changes, updating via the ota update to LS720ZV7 will softbrick your phone. Virgin Mobile's purposely screwing with us.

Unfortunately you have an 'almost soft brick' Almost meaning that you can just flash a v7 rom to get back up and running again. Unfortunately there is no v7 rom yet. I haven't made it yet. (I'm about to) To fix, you will need to run the unbrick guide. This will wipe the data on your internal memory. You'll need to re-install all of your apps. Re-root, re-install cwm, link2sd etc..

last time i did this then booted my phone, it went berserk. i had to do a complete stock reset because something messed up all the symlinks for my apps and my phone thought the entire external SD card was part of the phone memory (32 gigs in a phone, no way. )

I cannot. it just goes from that screen to CWM , if i hit power off or reboot, we go through the same thing again.

Yeah i know, but i was at work and didn't forsee this update.

it was the OTA update as i said, the whole "there is an update, click here to restart"

Yay...

there is no possible way to keep my apps? i have a feeling this is because of cwm. previous updates on my old nexus 7 tablet would not work with a custom recory installed and i had to reflash stock recovery before installing the OTA

actually, using aroma file maqnagter through cwm i can SEE my apps in data/app/ as apk files, but it says "symlink error" under them and they won't copy anywhere else (i got 25 to copy to my external sd)

Your issue is because you ran the ota update while rooted. Run the unbrick guide. If you want to save your apps, make a backup wile in cwm. Run the unbrick guide, and then once you have cwm re-installed, select advanced restore, and then restore your userdata only.

Once your up and running, I would remove the old backup, and then create a new backup.

this one, yes?

and i did just do a cwm backup, i noticed it was indeed backing up the /data/ section, as i saw my apk files that are installed. so i do that(unbrick link above) , then re-install cwm and advanced restore and do userdata only? i might have to wait till i go home to do all that. at least i got my apps backed up top my SD somehow.

can those .tar files be opened on pc and extracted? i don't really need the data.. just the APK's for re-install...

Yes, that link. You should be able to extract tar images on your computer. Restoring the /data will restore everything in the /data partition including your apks.

if i can just extract the tar and get my apks i'll do that and forget about cwm. i don't want this to happen again.

er. bit of a n"update" ? i tried to do the fix.. uh, the lg flash tool asked me ..three things i couldn't read? (chinese) and i clicked one.. .now it asks me for a login.... if i hit cancel it asks twice, then says authorization failed or something like that, and closes..

Make sure you follow the directions correctly, you missed a step. Make sure you download the dll file and place it in the folder.

The Megalock.dll is inside of the LGVM720_20130529_LGFLASHv151_Download.zip. Grab it and put into the LGFlashTool folder

nevermind. that was nonsense. I got it. and i found my most recent app backup that was just a few days ago. so i lost maybe 10 apps? woopie. Now tomorrow i'll be re-installing!
