Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] is rooting the optimus f3 worth it?

Okay so I had the kyocera event (i only switched to this one due to that one has a locked bootloader and this one was free lol) which i had rooted using the poot method i had debloated it..well is this phone worth rooting? will the same method work?

Can't comment on the "Poot method" as I did not use it (I used the Kingo root method) but I emphatically recommend rooting the phone and using a combination of Link2SD and the script by androidguy1991 to swap out the emulated SD card for your real card. Doing so will be like having a new, much more expensive phone. It is not only worth doing it's essential.

What script is that? Do you have a url?

Okay so I rooted this just now using the kingo root method..it worked..i think..i ran root checker and at first it said it wasn't rooted then i re ran it and it said it is..but the kingo app says it isn't..i have super user installed which is usually means theres root..so what's safe to remove thats bloat?

I removed the Voice Mail app and it caused problems for me. I just kept it. Smart share is nice for sending pics and videos to my TV. With Link2SD and GL to SD, Titanium Backup says I have 231 apps installed with 500ish mb free space internal. The root is very worth it.

Hey... I'll ask in this thread instead, in a shorter way, since I think I scared everyone off in the ZV6 thread:

Since the memory situation is (probably intentionally) screwed up on the brand new (VM) F3 I bought, I think I'm going to have to root it no matter what...and at least do Link2SD...

I currently am running it with ZV5 (and it's bugging me to do the update)... I'm wondering if I should leave it at ZV5 and then disable the update service after root, or I should get the ZV6 and then saferoot (or Kingo) the phone?

Aside of the "does it limit the LTE at 2.5GB" stuff or not, is there anything else that ZV6 buys us?

How can I then unroot the guy if later I need to take the update? I think I get it now after playing with a term emulator on the unrooted F3... but I'm not sure how to take it back to stock if I need to? Any advice here?

I'm trying to have a plan before rooting for my first time.

Thanks.

I would stay on the v5 for now. I would also root your f 3 with safe root that way you can roll it back if necessary.

OK thanks. It's now "reminding me" like every 10 minutes to take the update.. sigh.. I wanted to use the thing for several days first.. but... maybe not...

How do you roll back root on this device? I've done a lot of reading but it is still not clear to me...

I don't know. I haven't looked into it myself. The unbrick method would work if needed.

Thanks again.. I'm sorry if I sound like I'm whining like a little girl--one last question, tho.. I still would like to run the F3 a couple of more days before I decide if I'm going to root.. and I'm getting those blasted update reminders like every 10 minutes now.. quite annoying...seriously F'in annoying... like wouldn't once a day be enough?

If I decide that "I'll root later"--which I would for sure if VM wasn't trying to push the damn update every time I look at the phone-- I'll probably eventually have to take the ZV6 update. I'm afraid if I don't I'll end up bricking the phone anyway at this point and having to recover.

From all of the reading I've done. ZV6 breaks CWM from working completely making it "less safe" (i.e. having to do the work to reflash/unbrick) to root... but doesn't stop a unbrick (back to ZV5 apparently) ... So if I take the update, archive all the crap needed to unbrick for future use and then a "ZV7" is forced on to the phone soft bricking it later I should still be able to unbrick it, correct?

I think what you guys are doing is awesome, but really all I want is Link2SD.. and maybe to get rid of some of the VM bloatware (which won't matter if I get Link2SD working). So probably I won't get into ROM's etc.. even if they become available for this device. I do have some old tablets that I might further my education on.. but I don't probably need to do this to the phone.

I could be wrong, it could be just Sprint's nasty network here.. but since I've been doing a day of "install later" the data seems throttled, even tho it isn't. I'm starting to suspect I'll have to take the update at some point...

Thanks

But If I take the update, I lose CWM recovery, correct? Or is there more?

If all you want to do is use link2sd, I would root using saferoot or motochopper. Then update to v6. Use saferoot, not motochopper to reroot in v6. You then can use link2sd as needed. If you choose to revert, follow the unbrick method to go back to v5.

My v5 update failed, but everything is functioning normally so I'm staying v5. I wonder if/when the kit-kat update comes out for this phone in June if I will be able to update straight to it from v5. :/

Interesting... is there an official press release on this anywhere? ...Because on my Optimus V, everything I every heard about updates were untrue! None ever happened. (Except, of course to close the tethering hole, but my phone was too new anyway..) And since the street price for the F3 is now $78.. I wonder if it's on its way to being an Orphan also.

But that makes the plot thicken further as that will probably shut down rooting completely. If only they would have put $10 more into the phone (and charged us $25 more) and it had say 2x-4x the memory.. it wouldn't be worth rooting for 95% of us... And 80% of the rooted F3's are probably for Link2SD.. so if you want to f' with your customers.. don't cheap out at the same time. Moral of the story here.

But disabling update notifications looks to be mandatory then if I decide to root..

I'm going to take the ZV6 update and run it unrooted with the update for a week or so and then saferoot it and disable the system update notification.. probably... I don't see a reason to root ZV5 and then root again ZV6..

I don't really know what KitKat will gain us versus having no storage space?

Thanks all of you for all the advice.

For me its pretty straight forward. Stay at ZV5, root with Motochopper, disable update reminders. IMHO ZV6 does not offer anything worth the update (there is no way to prevent data throttle). If at anypoint we do get a KK update use Titanium to back up you apps. Manually save pics and anything else you want to save. Unbrick back to stock do the update to KK then restore your apps and personal files. I will be very suprised if they ever roll out KK for us. This phone has not gained the support we had hoped because LG wont unlock the BL. I love what work is being done and I support the Devs when I can. Just having root and CMW is amazing however part of me is still holing out hope for a CM flavor.

Well, I turned off the phone and turned it back on and it did the update.. so that is settled! Crap. I still think I'll root ZV6 with saferoot and then disable update notifications.. As far as the throttle.. really.. I live in the Midwest and I never have good enough coverage with Sprint for that to matter. Never get close to the 2.5Gb throttle ever.. I have wi-fi at home and work anyway...

But if someone else is thinking of buying the $78 phone (and if I could do it all over again).. activate it, put it in airplane mode and do what KJRob suggests BEFORE it downloads the update.

CWM would have been nice.. but it's a $78 phone.. if I get a year out of it w/o bricking it or physically breaking it.. I'll be happy.

I'll root thins weekend or next with saferoot. The memory limitations of the device are ridiculous.

Thanks again, all..

KJRob (or anyone else that can answer my question),

I am on version ZV5 and rooted with saferoot, how can I "prevent data throttle" as you mentioned? Is there a specific program or setting to do this?

Thank you in advance.
