Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] Root and CWM - EASY how-to guide for noobs

Not sure if the are compatible but have tried recoveries for the VM and Metro.

I know for the VM recovery works properly only by accessing via volume down + power. Due to lockedd bootloader rebooting direct fron ROM to recovery will reset by our device
 
Before you flash one of the recoveries be sure to pull copies of your aboot and stock recovery images. If the recoveries don't work these 2 images get changed and will be hard find stock ones to revert back.
 
I'm stuck. I followed the directions to install towelroot, CWMT, et cetera. I cannot access CWM, and though I get superuser request for apps, my internal memory is read-only and man, I'm so embarrassed. I've read the forums for three different ways to achieve root and CWMT; I've asked for help from people like sammyz, et cetera, and our LG F3 (LG720) is running v7 now... but, I given root to HTC and Samsung phones without all of this 'cloak and dagger' behavior that is inherent in an LG720 running 4.1.2... I've installed Link2SD, and formatted an external partition ext4... someone with godlike powers please jump in, and tell me what I need to do. I'm grateful that the phone isn't bricked, but, I just want to be able to move or link apps to SD, and unlock the read-only status of the internal memory... thanks. LW

Hey there, I saw someone post your responses on Android Central. Thought about it for a while, and I think the best solution for you is to have someone personally help you out with the unbrick method. Yes, it's a lot of work, but it's the only method I can think of that will most likely make your internal memory read-write again. I say personally, because it will require using a Windows PC along with the phone to get the job done.

I tried it with system, SD0 and SD Card... no soap. Remount is installed, but, after going through three Android Upgrades in two days, I'm not surprised... if you know anyone who is LG F3 v7 savvy that would be willing to assist me through something as banal as Yahoo Instant Messenger, I'd write all of you personal instrumental tunes that you can use for ringtones, et cetera. The phone isn't bricked, but being stuck with read-only memory and no working CWMT is killing me... any takers, PM me - LW

Just went through another Android Upgrade... the fourth in two days... Google Play will stop prior to rebooting the phone, then, all is normal again... aside from the read-only memory... looking back, I'd rather deal with Samsung and Odin, than be trapped in this locked-up, Jelly Bean ROM. LG obviously hurried into the smartphone market, but, rest assured that when I get the help I need, I will give it back to the AndroidForums community. What a bummer. LG720s are definitely an @$$ ache...

Make that FIVE upgrades; I've also stopped automatic updates from Google Play... what a crock...

I just got an email from kct, and I sent one back from my personal email account - I hope that the email helps everyone understand that I'm not a noob when it comes to giving root to smartphones. I'm stymied by this LG720 (F3), as I went ahead and upgraded to v7 once a clean v6 flash was done by LG in Ft. Worth, TX... Towelroot. and CWMT were installed, including BusyBox. CWMT didn't 'take', so I may need some help with that. I'm still here, and I still love AndroidForums - LW

The phone is going through Android Upgrades 3-4 times a day; it apparently still works, yet, it seems a little strange to be having your apps optimized via Android Upgrades umpteen times. I sent a PM to another LG user; maybe, with my limited PC access (we've got a laptop loosely hooked up to an older, 4:3 aspect ratio Acer flat screen - it's hard to maintain a steady connection with the old VGA screw-type connector). If anyone can point me in the right direction to gain a working CWMT, and a way to gain read/write access to sd0, and my 32 gB SD card - please respond here, or via PM - my appreciation would be boundless - LW
 
I used Stumproot (installed from the internal SD -- Motochopper didn't want to work) and it seemed to work fine after confirming with RootChecker. I continued from there using the CWM apk, installed from the external SD and continued as instructed in the OP. But it didn't boot into CWM recovery after holding Vol - and Pwr\lock (I got lost after installing CWM Recovery.zip -- wasn't sure how to get back to Android other than doing "reboot system now"->"Go back"... I didn't want to risk flashing stock recovery again since I'm not familiar with this process). Once Android booted, I went back to the CWM app, clicked reboot, and chose "Back up to external SD card". Seems to be doing the right things... except now I've got "Backup of cache completed. No sd-ext found. Skipping backup of sk-ext. generating md5 sum... Backup complete!" at the bottom of the backup and restore menu. So I went ahead to the main screen, did "reboot system now"->"Go back" again. Gonna test this backup to see if it actually did anything... Not even sure if I did a Nandroid backup or something else entirely. And Yes, I am noob. -_-

EDIT: Okay, tried just "backup" instead of "backup to external sdcard". I got "Error while making a backup image of /system". I just noticed I can't even see /system in the file manager (phone or PC) even after rooting and backing up.

Went to Mounts and Storage menu. Noticed I could "mount /system", but can't mount /sdcard. Trying to backup once more... out of space on SD card. Trying once more on external.

But I do see the nandroid.md5 file in the folder i exported to my PC, so that's progress...
