Modems will not give you knox. Bootloaders will. You should check and see if you have knox. Read the sticky concerning knox, and it will answer all your questions.
Knox is seriously no big deal. My niece just got a warranty replacement from vm with Knox tripped. It really has no effect.
The only way Knox will brick you is trying to downgrade firmware. I never downgrade.I assure you I don't have KNOX. I used the KNOX-free MK5 when I first got the phone, it was posted here and on XDA. No KNOX, never had KNOX, never will have KNOX. KNOX is a very big deal when its tripped and then bricks your phone to a nice little paperweight, no warranty or replacement coverage for that... Thanks for the responses.

Last time my phone bricked from KNOX because I hit "Yes" to applying root in Philz recovery after I had completely wiped everything. I don't trust my phone with KNOX again.
Was it a soft brick? I rarely have used the built in apply root in Philz but once when I did, the stock rom would fail to boot. I always just flash an updated version of SuperSu. I bet that Philz screwed something up in the system while applying root or the root was old. Like Madbat said, downgrading will brick your device.
If you are no longer scared of tripping the knox flag I would say updating to NDC by flashing the NDC tar with Odin would be the way to go. (Thats android 4.4.2 stock IIRC) There is another update that you can get OTA that you should probably avoid.Last question, So whats the 'safest' update for our phones right now? and how do you go about rooting it?

Root the same way as before, Flash latest version of your recovery with odin. Make a backup of the stock. Then flash custom rom or root the stock one.
PS If you are still using philz you should be using the d2lte version, also double check the upload date/version number as the newest is not in order.
Mobile Odin will likely brick you. I highly advise against it.I highly recommend you read this article http://odindownload-com.com/uncateg...m-with-mobile-odin-pro-without-tripping-knox/ oh and heres a list of flash kernels http://odindownload-com.com/flash-kernels/
Its not the same as Odin on PC, it works in tandem with recovery. And the main thing, it was never properly updated to work on KitKat (which is clearly stated in the play store listing). But it was even hit and miss on jellybean. I've seen plenty of people brick their phones using it. Its one of those "shortcuts" that is waaay more trouble than its worth. My recommendation, if you're going to use Odin, use Odin for PC.Thanks for the input Madbat, could you elaborate on that please?
