You can display missed call/message counts using many different apps, from Zooper widgets (an app that lets you build your own informational widget or use a pre-made template) through to Nova Launcher (homescreen replacement)) + TeslaUnread (plugin by the launcher's developer) which together will put little "unread counts" on your phone/sms icons (and let you customise the style).
