Visual notification of messages

With KK, Facebook, my email and Gmail, I was able to see a red circle with the amount of unread messages but since Lp, they don't come up. Is this a Lollipop thing and they did away with that?

I am hating this Lollipop interface. It has colors that are irritating to the eyes. The messaging app looks like baby diarrhea, and the Gmail red/orange color is too strong.

I hope someone will supply a substantive answer to this problem. I, too, would like the indications.

Try clearing cache/data to the Visual Message app.
